※The exhibition period has been shortened. (Originally 2019/12/15–2020/4/5).

Surrealism, led by French poet Andre Breton has been one of the most influential art movements of the 20th century. The surrealists criticized the rationality-based thinking of the modern age, instead, they were influenced by psycho-analysis and delved deep into the unconscious world in pursuit of a new reality or “super-reality”. This exhibition is the first to trace the roots of the surrealist movement and the birth of surrealist paintings and shine a spotlight on the development of surrealism in Japan.
