2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the Soviet lunar probe that took the first successful images of the far side of the moon and the 50th anniversary of humankind’s landing on the lunar surface. Still today space remains a target of human ambition, and the relationship between humans and the universe has been explored in 20th century art. Russian art, literature, philosophy, and political developments continuously reflect urges to find a beyond, a “somewhere that is not here,” and express thoughts toward the future.

Through installations, drawings, film, and other works of cutting-edge Russian contemporary art, this exhibition questions and attempts to find answer to the meaning of humanity in the universe while considering the extent to which Russian culture has pursued matters of the cosmos throughout history and in the present. In an otherworldly atmosphere, it awakens human dreams of outer space and the unknown, letting visitors experience “the power to dream.”
