Marking its 21st edition this year, the “Domani: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition started in 1998. The large-scale group show, held inside the National Art Center, Tokyo, presents Japanese artists sent abroad on the Agency for Cultural Affairs Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists. Subtitled “End of the Heisei Period,” the 21st Domani exhibition showcases examples of exciting talent from the program in recent years whose artworks are suitable for the Center’s spacious exhibition room. As the last “Domani” exhibition of the Heisei period due to the planned abdication of the current emperor in 2019, it features nine artists who were born in the Showa 50s (1970s) and started their careers in the Heisei period (from 1989). Their work is the result of a transnational process of shuttling back and forth, both physically and culturally, between Japan and the world at large. In addition, the exhibition includes examples of the work by Natsunosuke Mise, who stayed in Florence as a previous participant and whose work was selected from the contemporary art collection of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
