Best of Museum Collection Part 1: Red and White Plum Blossoms (National Treasure)

MOA Museum of Art
Finished
Created during the Edo-period painter’s late years, the National Treasure “Red and White Plum Blossoms” is Korin Ogata’s masterpiece that defines Japanese art. It showcases the finest techniques of creation in magnificent trunks of the trees using the “tarashikomi” technique, plum flowers without outlines, and the layout of buds — all these methods together create a dynamic and highly decorative design on the screens. This pair of folding screens is also an interesting example in which the artist tried dyeing techniques on gold and silver leaves. This exhibition also presents two other National Treasures housed at MOA: Ninsei Nonomura’s “Tea-leaf Jar with a design of Wisteria” and the calligraphy album “Tekagami Kanboku-jo,” a compilation of excellent calligraphic works from 8th to 15th centuries, as well as artworks designated Important Cultural Properties.
