Chim↑Pom’s “May, 2020, Tokyo / A Drunk Pandemic” comprises two projects. “May, 2020, Tokyo” is from May 2020, when the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed and a State of Emergency due to COVID-19 was issued for Tokyo. Chim↑Pom usually takes its projects out into the streets, but with “stay home” orders in place, the group created an installation that considers the city in that moment. “A Drunk Pandemic,” a project from 2019 in a giant abandoned tunnel at Victoria Station in Manchester, England, was created as part of the Manchester International Festival. It visualizes the biological processes of cholera and yeast used for making beer. Chim↑Pom created a brewery at what is now Victoria Station and previously a grave for people who died of cholera, brewing an original beer called “A Drop of Pandemic.”
