100 Years of BUNRIHA: Can Architecture Be Art?

Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Kikuji Ishimoto, Mayumi Takizawa, Sutemi Horiguchi, Keiichi Morita, Shigeru Yada
The Bunrinha, considered the first contemporary architectural movement in Japan, was formed in 1920 by Kikuji Ishimoto, Mayumi Takizawa, Sutemi Horiguchi, Keiichi Morita, Shigeru Yada, and Mamoru Yamada, just days before their graduation from Tokyo Imperial University. Until 1928, the group continued welcoming new members while periodically organizing exhibitions and publishing architectural art books. By developing a unique architectural style, the group embodied the trend of social democratization occurring throughout Japan. The exhibition traces the Bunrinha’s history through architectural works—defined by the group’s youthful energy—and related documents.
