*LEESAYA is pleased to announce that it will restarting “SAKURA,” a solo exhibition by Bontaro Dokuyama, from June 10 (Wed.), 2020.

At “Aichi Triennale 2019: Taming Y/Our Passion,” Bontaro Dokuyama showed three video works and one installation: a cherry tree made of “uiro,” a famous Aichi confection that is a popular souvenir of trips to the prefecture. The people of Japan tend to be particularly charmed by cherry blossoms, both when they are in full bloom and when they are falling. Just where does this sentiment come from? Focusing on the cherry tree (“sakura”), which Dokuyama did not fully address in Aichi, this exhibition will attempt a deeper contemplation on freedom of expression and the cultural role of the expresser.

A flower-viewing excursion and a talk session are also planned during the run of the exhibition, as Lee Saya Gallery is located very close to Kamuro-zaka, a popular spot for admiring cherry blossoms. Lee Saya will provide further details through its website and SNS accounts.
