Shoko Hashimoto
Goze were the itinerant female blind musicians that traveled the rural byways of Japan, playing the shamisen and singing traditional songs. Half a century ago in the early 1970s, Hashimoto accompanied three goze on their travels from village to village along the Sea of Japan. Throughout the seasons, the goze would visit farmhouses, sing short songs accompanied by shamisen. Villagers rewarded them with rice, crops, and money. During that time, the existence of goze was already nearly lost due to the industrial and urban development in Japan at that time. Hashimoto’s photographs provide a glimpse into the lives of the people they visit through Hashimoto’s photographs.
