Come to Bauhaus! —The Basis of Education in Art and Design

Tokyo Station Gallery
Finished

Artists

Marcel Breuer, Paul Klee, Franz Singer, Joost Schmidt et al.
The Bauhaus was established as a school of design by the architect Walter Gropius in 1919 in the historic German city of Weimar and celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Despite only being active for 14 years before its enforced closure due to Nazi repression in 1933, it was full of experimental spirit and revolutionized education in the world of art and design, where its enormous impact can still be felt to this day.
Iconic artists of the era, including Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, worked as teachers at the Bauhaus, educating outstanding designers and architects and leading to the creation of groundbreaking designs. The lessons in the preliminary course with which the students began their training were particularly unique.
This exhibition provides an opportunity to discover and experience part of the lessons given by different teachers, with a focus on the preliminary course. It also features about 300 works and materials from various studios, including examples of metalwork, pottery, textile, furniture, printing, advertising and stage performance.
This is the first opportunity to bring together works and materials from Takehiko Mizutani, Iwao Yamawaki, Michiko Yamawaki, and Tamae Ohno, four Japanese students of the Bauhaus.
