Statement by curator ob:

Around 2010, the appearance of the illustration social media service “pixiv” spawned a new art scene in Japan. Young painters appeared one after another like a festival, and were active both on the internet and in the gallery. The free imagination that floats between the virtual and the phsical is loosely connected and I, ob, curated an exhibition “wassyoi” three times with the artists I met on pixiv. Ten years have passed since then. In the modern age of digital technology, the level of drawing technology has become higher, but the impression that a painter who expresses a “painting” seems rather rare. Now that the majority of internet communications have become commonplace, what are the thoughts on physical sensory expressions?

During the solo exhibition “Spiral and Spring” that was held a few months ago, I livestreamed a live paint session every day for those who could not come due to the seriousness of the virus. Having a deep dialogue with young artists at an event that took place during the exhibition period made me want to explore the undifferentiated sensibilities that are not biased toward illustrations or paintings, which led to this curation exhibition. However, the timing of the event was undecided due to the announcement of the declared national emergency. Everyday, we carried out online live streams with ten participating artists aged 21 to 25 in search for what we can do during COVID-19. What did the artists, who expressed themselves through an online dialogue, find in the light of online communication? During this post-coronavirus era, I would like to “wassyoi” the possibilities of an intermediate area between illustration and painting for a new future.
