The formidable economic strength and distinctive language and culture of the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona have shaped its unique artistic legacy. This exhibition showcases the arts that flourished in Catalonia during a period of roughly 80 years, from the 1850s when the city engaged in modernization, through the time of the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition, and up until the Spanish Civil War. The approximately 130 items on display include works by architects who drove forward the modernization of the city, including Gaudí and Montaner, and great artists such as Picasso, Miró, Dali, Santiago Rusiñol, and Ramon Casas.
