A cycle of gramophone concerts is regularly held within the lecture theatre “Academia” at Intermediatheque. This concert series focuses on the Satoshi Yuze record collection, from which it selects famous jazz recordings of the 1920s–1940s played on the E.M.G. Mark IX and other gramophones, in order to share a quality of sound which has now vanished from public spaces. In 1917, when “Indiana” was composed by James F. Hanley as a nostalgic ode to the eponymous state, it was immediately recorded by the Original Dixieland Jass Band on one of the first jazz records to be pressed. However, it did not become a standard before it resurfaced ten years later, played by white jazzmen from Chicago. From the 1930s on, as it became a swing instrumental classic, Ballard MacDonald’s lyrics were forgotten. Starting with Eddie Condon’s 1928 revival and up to postwar modern recordings by Dave Brubeck, this event will retrace on original SP records the many metamorphoses of “Indiana” over a quarter century.
