*Hara Museum Arc is temporarily closed until May 15. The museum will be open from May 16.

Masterworks featured in this exhibition include “Rei Shojo with Flower Basket”, which depicts the Chinese devotee of Zen Buddhism and paragon of filial piety who was a common theme in Japanese paintings starting from the Muromachi period. Another work thought to be of the same period is “Portrait of Lie Zi” by Shukei Sesson, in which the Daoist philosopher is shown riding on the wind, an ability said to derive from his mastery of the supernatural arts. These and other selected paintings and calligraphic works from the Hara Rokuro Collection of traditional East Asian art appear alongside contemporary artworks.
