Open Space includes a gallery, a mini-theater, and ICC video archive "HIVE." Since its inauguration in 2006, the space has been open to the public free of charge, presenting new exhibitions annually.

In addition to exhibiting media art by prominent local and overseas artists and newcomers—and other ongoing projects—the space incorporates a themed exhibit area in which the changing relationship between media, arts and society is documented. By displaying artist’s works and also providing explanations of their social, cultural, and ideological background through artist interviews and other material, the Open Space aims to introduce the bond between “media technology and artistic culture” in a simple and easy-to-understand way, constituting a pillar of ICC activities. It also serves as a place where the possibility of a new communication culture based on artistic expression using advanced technology can be demonstrated.

Fumio Nambata (1941-1974) produced a large number of wonderful works notable for their delicate lines and coloring. His watercolors, drawings, and his vivid life left a firm impression on postwar art in Japan. Fumio was the second son of Tatsuoki Nambata, one of the pioneers of abstract painting in Japan, and displayed an exceptional natural talent as a young man. Driven by a love for literature and music, he worked on his own, seeking an original approach for his art. Through self-introspection and sincerely facing up to the realities of contemporary society, Fumio created works mainly on paper that freshly convey his characteristically delicate, but at the same time lucid sensitivity. Although his productive period spanned only a little over 10 years, he created a startling number of works. His general reputation is of a painter of themes from youth, but artistically, his skills were already sufficiently advanced and developed, surpassing simple maturity to come full circle and acquire a great variety and richness.

This exhibition is planned to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Fumio's birth. It includes a careful selection of his works from the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery's Terada Collection, and also presents many of his best and most well known works from other collections. These are complemented by the artist's diaries, sketchbooks, photographs, and other items to give a multi-faceted introduction of Fumio Nambata.

In the early 1990s, commercial services were first made available in the Japanese realms of the Internet. The subsequent development of broadband connections, and the popularization of so-called smartphones and other pocket-sized terminals paved the way for 24/7 Internet layering of reality and information that takes place here, one may describe the present situation as a constant back-and-forth between real environments and the virtual world of the Internet.

The Internet enables us to figure out what relatives, friends and acquaintances, and eventually even unknown and unseen people in other parts of the world are doing right now. The background of this is defined by data of individual Internet users recording/discribing themselves and their habits. The community of Facebook users has grown to global scale, and it is said that approximately one million images and about two hundred million messages are posted every day on Flickr and Twitter respectively. These numbers alone are so large that a human lifetime is not enough to view them all.

Such data is being openly modified, processed and reconfigured as necessary through the respective services' application programming interfaces (API). The frequent trade of data between different services reflects a reinforcement of mutual connections, and in the present day the Internet itself is definitely penetrating our conscious mind as a medium that mirrors everyday life. Quite certainly, this is where new, different kinds of realities, textures, modes of communication, and ideas of human life are being generated.

Focusing on “post Internet” art originating in present-day network environments generated in a world in which the Internet has become an everyday matter, and reality is being subsumed in the world of information, this exhibition examines previous examples of artistic work, and attempts to offer a preview of future developments of the Internet in connection with art.

Kwan Sheung Chi (born in 1980) attracted attention for "Teapoy", the artwork made by Kwan according to his mother's memory and which visualizes family history and human relationships, included in the "Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 2005" (Hong Kong Art Museum). The videos he has been working intensively on in recent years have brought him to international attention, and have been invited to many international exhibitions, such as "Videozone V" (Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, Israel, 2010), and "Homemade video from Hong Kong" (National Center for Contemporary Art, St. Petersburg, Russia, Arad Art Museum, Romania, 2011).

The common theme in his video works is an on-going wrestle with the duality of success and failure, and achievement and defeat. For example, "Drinking a glass of hot chocolate with a folk" is a record of Kwan drinking a full glass of hot chocolate using a fork. In "Left vs. Right", he counts a winning rate of "Rock, paper, scissors" using his left hand vs. right hand. Through his work that is seemingly not advancing, we are invited to be witnesses of a life and and to come up with exit strategies out of our dualistic mind-set. The "ONE MILLION (Japanese Yen)", a new video work made for this exhibition, counts a handful of bills until one million by repeating the video in the post-production process, expressing an ironic perspective on the principle of a monetary system and money game, the economic activity without reality.

The name of the show is "Collected Works", including different works in addition to video, like a book which contains different works of an author. The "Apple Core" is a pack of apple juice. In a supermarket it is a drink, a consumer product; putting it in a gallery, people might think about how do we consume, what we're actually consuming. "Lilies" is a seemingly a bunch of lilies in a vase, but actually a collection of artificial lilies if you take a close look. Each branch is different from each other. Each factory making artificial lilies has its own concept, an ideal form of what the lily is and how it should be. The lilly collections are looking towards a common objective but none of them are the same; they all look different, they are all fake.
