Using three floors of the main building, this permanent exhibition presents about 200 to 250 pieces selected from our museum's collection of about 9,200 works, including Japanese- and Western-style paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures, to provide a historical overview on modern Japanese art from the beginning of the 20th century to present. The show also includes some overseas works related to Japanese pieces. Many of the exhibits are largely replaced five times a year. In addition to the historical approach, a smaller show, "Topic in Focus" is given in each exhibition period to shed new light on modern Japanese art.

The permanent collection is displayed in regular rotation. Please check the museum's website for details.

First retrospective of Tomoyoshi Murayama (1901-1977), whose avant-garde activities influenced Japanese modern art in the 1920-30s. After coming back from Berlin in 1923, Murayama joined the group "Mavo". He is well-known for works featuring collage figures and dance performances, as well as stage designs and illustrations for children books. The exhibition surveys not only those rare works that Murayama made by himself, but also works by Kandinsky and Klee, those who influenced Murayama during his stay in Berlin, and other colleages, such as Tomoo Wadachi and Yoshimitsu Nagano.

Recognized for his artistic talents at a young age, Hiroji Noda (born in 1952) became the youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition at Minami Gallery in 1977, the year after he had graduated from Tama Art University. In the Eighties, however, NODA embarked on a variety of explorations in an effort to discover new possibilities in painting. In this exhibition, we survey the artist’s over 30-year career with 140 works that have emerged from his continually evolving approach, and examine the effect that NODA’s experiments have had on the Japanese art scene.

Noda's exploration of the essence of painting began with box-shaped forms that were in effect a kind of relief. The artist continued to develop this approach in the mid-Eighties, creating a unique painting style in which he covered the support medium with a sack-like fabric. Then in the Nineties, Noda added further depth to his work by sewing, folding back, and layered the canvas. But around 2000, he gradually turned to a flat foundation, and transformed the picture plane with the freewheeling depiction of unusual images. Finally, in recent years, Noda has created series based on specific themes, and focused on combinations of works while also placing greater emphasis on the manner in which they are displayed.

Noda has remained actively engaged in showing his work, but there has rarely been an opportunity to survey his entire career, from the early period to the present. We hope that this exhibition will provide greater insight into how Noda has developed his artistic philosophy as well as shedding light on how his ideas are transformed into actual works. And in addition to tracing the trajectory of this outstanding artist’s career, we hope to encourage reflection on future directions in painting.

Hiroji Noda was born in Wakayama in 1952 and graduated from Tama Art University in 1976. His first solo show came after being discovered by Minami Gallery's Kusuo Shimizu. Since then, he has been exhibiting works that consistently explore the relationship between painting and its supports. This is Noda's first retrospective in Tokyo, showcasing box-shaped reliefs from the early 80s onwards and other similar works wrapped in bags and canvas.

The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Japan of the French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. Reconstructed within the unique space of the Hara Museum, formerly a private residence, is the artist's retrospective exhibition that was first launched at the Centre Pompidou in Paris where it proved to be one of the most popular shows in the history of the museum.

As one of France's most prominent contemporary artists, Jean-Michel Othoniel is known for his large-scale glass sculptures, such as the sculptural piece Le Kiosque des Noctambules (2000) which adorns the entrance of the Palais-Royal–Musée du Louvre metro station in the center of Paris. He has also held exhibitions at major museums around the world. In Japan, the artist installed a large outdoor sculpture entitled Kokoro (2009) at Hara Museum ARC, the Hara Museum's annex in Shibukawa, Gunma prefecture. This permanent installation, a unique heart-shaped work made of red-colored glass globes, now provides a warm welcome to every visitor to the museum.

The present exhibition showcases works spanning 25 years of the artist's career. Numbering some 60 pieces, they range from early works made with sulfur and beeswax to his most recent large-scale sculptures made with colorful Murano glass from Italy. The title of the exhibition is taken from the song made famous by Frank Sinatra, My Way, which is symbolic of a unique vision unswayed by popular trends.

One of Japan’s leading contemporary sculptors, Shigeo Toya uses a chainsaw to carve and chisel away at this material before coating it with ash. The resultant sculptures, riddled with pleats, protrusions and cavities, evoke a palpable tension in the viewer. This exhibition showcases some of his recent works set against the striking underground and overground spaces of the museum.

Tokyo Gallery + BTAP is pleased to present an exhibition by the wood sculptor Mitsukuni Takimoto entitled “What is to carve, what is to be carved”. This is Takimoto’s second solo show with the gallery, showcasing a selection of pieces that include sculptures from his Water and Cloud series, which he has been working on since the late 1990s, as well as a number of his most recent works.

At a time when the term “contemporary art” has become commonplace, the name of Takimoto’s occupation – wood sculptor – seems to have a somewhat nostalgic ring to it. Although contemporary art tends to emphasize the concept behind the work, wood sculpture privileges material and technique above all else. Techniques that the body of the artist has acquired and absorbed sculpt the wood, bestowing form on it. Out of this, a shape emerges, conveying the entirety of this process to the viewer. Why, then, do we feel a certain nostalgia when we experience this sequence of events?

During a previous solo exhibition held in 2002, Takimoto said of his work:

This work called “Waterfall”, in which I attempt to depict water by carving a block of wood, has absolutely no reality to it. The act of creating a waterfall consists in straying from its actual form. When I make a “waterfall”, what I am really doing is recreating the atmosphere that surrounds it – or at least trying to do so. It’s the same with how I go about making my sculptures. The first step is to create the part that represents the sky. In a certain sense, once that first component is in place, I can start by creating a form out of nothingness...

All art finally attains some form or other as the result of a creative act. Surrounded by countless things that we simply overlook or pass over, however, we tend to forget that the form of an object derives from an act of creation.

To put it another way, our modern information-oriented society allows us to come into contact with an entire panoply of cultural idioms and expressions, whether in the realm of fine art or otherwise: both old and new, from every single culture that has ever existed all over the world, in a form that is instantly obvious and readily comprehensible. This state of affairs, however, also means that we can no longer return to a time when artistic creation was guided by the act and process of form-making. The medium that Takimoto has chosen to devote his artistic career to has long been associated with divine spirits, deities and Buddhist iconography in the context of Japanese history. In Japan, the materials that have been cultivated and nurtured by the country’s natural, vernacular environment and history have always been inseparably tied to the artists and craftsmen who draw on these materials for their work.

What does it mean to sculpt, to create something out of nothing? What materials should the sculptor use? Which tools and techniques should he turn to in order to impart a shape and form to his creations?
As varieties of artistic expression continue to multiply, the processes related to the act of actually making something are neglected, yielding works that have lost their “feel” and sense of texture. This, then, is perhaps what remains to be done in our age – to discover how we can recover a certain sacred or divine texture that used to be embodied by the shape and form of an artwork.

G-tokyo, a singular art fair, presents a select group of established, Tokyo-based galleries, each acknowledged internationally as being at the forefront of contemporary art. Exhibited works are created especially for presentation at G-tokyo; booths consist of solo exhibitions along with thoughtfully curated group shows.

Rather than expand in size, in deference to the exclusive presentation of the highest quality works of contemporary art, G-tokyo has continued to deliberately limit the number of exhibiting galleries and is anticipating this, the fair's third year, to be the most exciting and refined to date.

Special feature: G-tokyo / α Exhibition
The acquisition of art is the quintessential art fair experience. The G-tokyo /α Exhibition has been designed to help a wider audience enjoy the pleasure of purchasing art and the joy of owning it, and thus will feature works available at an accessible price and size with a focus on new pieces by emerging artists selected by top galleries; some of the brightest stars of today’s contemporary art scene.

This will be the first major Tokyo retrospective exhibition of the work of Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005), who has recently attracted increased attention for the role she played as one of the foremost female members of the postwar avant-garde artist group, the Gutai Art Association. Exhibits will include ‘Work (Bell)’ (1955), in which sound races around the exhibition space, the ‘Electric Dress’ (1956) that she wore for several performances, and numerous paintings, collages and video records, presenting an overview of the pioneering activities of this artist who combined performance with the plastic arts over a period of fifty years.

See website for more details on related talks, screenings, and performances.

Ay-O (1931 - ) is known as ‘the Rainbow Artist’ for the way in which he depicts all his motifs through a spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. He was a member of the international avant-garde artist group, Fluxus, using everyday actions or objects as his material to produce a form of art that could be experienced physically through smell, touch and the other senses. This exhibition will present a large-scale, participatory installation and a new painting, 30 meters in length, as well as oil paintings, prints, and performance records or re-creations, tracing the course of his career.

Performance by the artist scheduled for late March. See website for details and updates.

For its third exhibition, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo presents its first group show entitled “Cosmic Travelers – Toward the Unknown”. This is also its first show dedicated to Japanese contemporary scene and attests its desire to acknowledge the long-standing relationship between Louis Vuitton and Japan. Within an artistic and institutional landscape paying an increasing attention to young artists, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo wishes to present a dissonant but complementary point of view. Around the historically grounded figure of Noriyuki Haraguchi, who firmly embodies the links between Western and Japanese avant-gardes, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo will present artists from two different generations, representing various trends and media.

The word “cosmic” means many things. While the most universal meaning for the word relates to our universe referencing outer space, its connotations are manifold; it can mean limitlessness, infinity, liberal and unifying. As a metaphor, “cosmic” is a state of being with expansive associations, and when combined with the word “travelers,” it becomes a journey of the mind and body involving the senses, intuition, emotions and thoughts. It is in this sense that we are all cosmic travelers moving through space and time searching for truth and the meaning of life.

The five artists selected for the exhibition - Noriyuki Haraguchi, Ataru Sato, Tomoko Shioyasu, Masakatsu Takagi and Go Watanabe - are all forerunners in exploring the multitudes of cosmic aspects in their creative processes. In conceiving new works for the light filled space of Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, the artists have inevitably incorporated this predominant feature into their works, but each on their own terms. Just as light is the source of all life and the underlining principal for creation, so too, here, it is the unifying element between the artworks presented.

Haraguchi is known for his use of discarded or no-longer functional industrial materials to make simple geometrical structures that reveal a hidden relationship between space and materials in a way that challenges our perception of reality. He has created site-specific works since the Seventies, and for this exhibition, he presents “Triad”, which consists of the three deeply related pieces including an aluminum container with a black liquid filled to the rim. The lacquer-like surface reflects the surrounding space with stunning clarity paradoxically disclosing its overwhelming solidity as an illusion. Interacting with the immense structure of the space, where the polarities of light and shadow are unified, this work transforms the space into a charged field of exquisitely balanced and composed forms.

Sato sensed sacredness from the exhibition space where the abundant natural light continuously streams through the glasses, and he created a portrait of a god entitled “Sign”. His provocative and diabolic visions are composed of convoluted amalgamations of deformed, fragmented body parts, internal organs and bodies cut wide open, unknown creatures, faces of people, animals and bugs. What might be called “trans-surrealistic, micro-maniac” portrait invites us past the surface into the vast stretches of a deep mysterious world within. Sato will also create his work with the universe as its theme in a live performance over several sessions.

Shioyasu makes exquisitely detailed paper-cuttings that transform the traditional decorative medium of Kiri-e into a dynamic harmony of patterns emulating natural elements such as water droplets, bubbles and cells. A large piece of paper work, eight meters in length and two meters in width, floats in the exhibition space just as its title “Flowing Sky” refers. Her other piece, “Bubbles”, a three-dimensional collage of round shapes made with pierced holes in synthetic paper, floats freely in an acrylic case. Astoundingly subtle interplays of light and shadow literally create and quietly amplify, through intricately cut patterns, a sense of harmony and interconnectedness between the visible and the invisible.

Watanabe creates new worlds in landscapes with animated surfaces. He crafts images with a variety of digital techniques, taking everyday objects from interior spaces as well as landscapes for his motifs, paring them down to their essential components and giving autonomy and freedom of movement to their surfaces. For this exhibition, he presents “one landscape, a journey”, an animated landscape composed of everyday cups and bowls stacked in a kitchen sink that is based on the panoramic landscape seen through the glass walls of the exhibition space. Suggesting a world in constant motion, Watanabe’s work reveals the origins of the word animation, the imparting of anima or soul to inorganic objects. The way he gives motion to the objects encourages us to consider the possibility of another dimension of reality in which all things are alive and conscious.

Multi-media artist Takagi’s work offers multi-dimensional adventures in virtual dreamscape through free association. It is a “moving painting” that brings forth a delightful feeling of riding on the oceanic waves of constantly changing color and form. For this exhibition, Takagi presents a visionary landscape that simulates the energy and radiance of the sun in which elements of fluid color and form merge and coalesce to form a larger whole, eventually creating a symphony of energy that transforms our inner vision.

All five of these artists are Cosmic Travelers in every possible sense of the term as the configuration of the exhibition mimics the vortex of cosmic energy already moving within the space. Walking through this exhibition literally becomes a journey from the darkness into the light offering a dynamic rhythm to the overall experience, in which visitors will be provided different traveling experiences every time they visit the exhibition.

In 2012, which marks the 40th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Japan and China, the Tokyo National Museum is holding an exhibition of masterpieces from the Palace Museum, Beijing.

The site of the Palace Museum, Beijing, was formerly the residence of 24 Chinese emperors from the Ming-dynasty Emperor Yongle to the Qing-dynasty Emperor Puyi. In addition to its own glorious architecture, it houses a collection of more than 1.8 million artifacts.

This magnificent exhibition consists of a selection of 200 masterpieces from that collection and is split into two sections. The first section features the simultaneous display of 41 Song- and Yuan-dynasty calligraphic works and paintings not previously shown outside the palace (some works for a limited period), as well as masterpieces of court and literati paintings, must-see works by three of the best calligraphers of the Song period, and masterworks of calligraphy by Yuan-period literati. Boasting a tremendous array of fabulous bronzes, jades and other artifacts, this lineup can be described as a defining exhibition of the Palace Museum. The second section centers around four portraits of Emperor Qianlong, whose reign marked the Qing dynasty’s golden period. This section seeks to understand the abundance of world views held in the Qing dynasty. There is also an area that attempts to recreate, using existing artworks, a portrait of Emperor Qianlong in which he is depicted surrounded by various masterpieces.

Norichika Hayashi was born in 1948 and graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts. His wooden sculptures depict casual everyday landscapes that evoke a faint nostalgia in the mind of the viewer. This exhibition showcases 4 pieces including "Safety First", a randomly assembled installation of machine parts that resembles a construction site.

Since the 1990s, Lee Bul has built an international career as one of the leading contemporary artists from Asia. Her oeuvre is dominated by sculptures that demonstrate a mastery of materials and techniques, including her celebrated Cyborgs and Anagrams series, hybrid machine-and-organic forms referencing critical theory as well as dystopian cinematic worlds; karaoke "pods" that evoke space capsules for eternal sleep; and glittering, spectral gyres and cityscapes that seem to be falling into ruin. For over twenty years, it could be said that Lee, whose practice has spanned her home country's transition from military dictatorship to democracy, has been on a quest for an elusive something, the ultimate physical form perhaps, or the ideal society.

While showcasing her major works in the four sections "Ephemeral Presence," "Beyond Human," "Utopia and Dreamscape" and "From Me, Belongs to You Only," in the "Studio" section this exhibition will present the drawings and models that also form the font of her ideas. The subtitle "From Me, Belongs to You Only" is also a message from Lee: her attempt to find the "something" for which she is constantly searching in a personal relationship with each individual viewer.

Symposium (Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available)
Seeking an Ideal Society
In her series "Mon grand récit," and other works, Lee Bul has pursued an ideal vision of society with reference to the utopian theories and social political theories of the 20th century. The South Korea of the late 1980s, where she began her work as an artist, was experiencing a time of both hope and uncertainty as the country shifted towards democracy and existing value systems were being shaken up. The panelists at this symposium will be Lee Bul, who will visit Japan for the exhibition; Richard Noble a leading Western researcher into utopian theories; and Takahashi Toru, a scholar on cyborg theory, who considers future societies with reference to cyborg technology really does have the potential to create 'ultimate bodies.' These panelists will discuss Lee's artwork in the context of the 20th century, out of which utopian theories were born. In the present age of confusion, we invite you to come and think about the visions for ideal society that each of them describe.
