Ken Lum, born in 1956, is an internationally active artist based in Vancouver. His work approaches everyday social structures with a critical eye and an ironic sense of humor, traversing a wide variety of media that includes photography, sculpture, painting and installation.

Lum’s art is concerned with the ways in which identity formation intersects with society’s transformation. This focus is deeply connected to his birth to Chinese immigrant parents in Vancouver, a city of numerous ethnic groups. In his works which use the visual language of public signage, billboards, logos and the mass media, he aims to demystify the tensions and contradictions of living in an increasingly globalizing world. His chosen approach continues to question the very nature of culture in contemporary society, by dismantling pleasant phrasings and blurring the boundaries between high art and popular culture.

Five representative works produced since 2000 will be presented.

Mana Konishi’s landscapes and portraits are painted with graciously unconstrained and sensual brushstrokes, as well as a unique sense of color. Her painting distances itself from viewers with its creation of a serene and unreal world of uncertainty.

In creating her works, Konishi first selects photographs from numerous snapshots for motifs and layouts. These photographs serve to give a general sense of what to draw, and are merely a starting point for her creative expression. Her interest is not to paint these scenes and figures realistically, but rather to fill them with unique stories, creating a seemingly illusory world for her paintings.

Rather than images that would give a clear view of the finished painting, selected photographs are nondescript. Konishi chooses photographs that feel oddly incomplete, and imagines new stories for them. Moving her brush stimulates more thoroughly the artist’s subconscious world of imagery, and paintings become visualized through this process.

In this exhibition, Konishi presents portraits featuring her son, Alex. She has been working with portraits in recent years, and it has been three years since "Portraits", herlast solo show in 2009.

Tokyo Gallery + BTAP is pleased to present an exhibition by the wood sculptor Mitsukuni Takimoto entitled “What is to carve, what is to be carved”. This is Takimoto’s second solo show with the gallery, showcasing a selection of pieces that include sculptures from his Water and Cloud series, which he has been working on since the late 1990s, as well as a number of his most recent works.

At a time when the term “contemporary art” has become commonplace, the name of Takimoto’s occupation – wood sculptor – seems to have a somewhat nostalgic ring to it. Although contemporary art tends to emphasize the concept behind the work, wood sculpture privileges material and technique above all else. Techniques that the body of the artist has acquired and absorbed sculpt the wood, bestowing form on it. Out of this, a shape emerges, conveying the entirety of this process to the viewer. Why, then, do we feel a certain nostalgia when we experience this sequence of events?

During a previous solo exhibition held in 2002, Takimoto said of his work:

This work called “Waterfall”, in which I attempt to depict water by carving a block of wood, has absolutely no reality to it. The act of creating a waterfall consists in straying from its actual form. When I make a “waterfall”, what I am really doing is recreating the atmosphere that surrounds it – or at least trying to do so. It’s the same with how I go about making my sculptures. The first step is to create the part that represents the sky. In a certain sense, once that first component is in place, I can start by creating a form out of nothingness...

All art finally attains some form or other as the result of a creative act. Surrounded by countless things that we simply overlook or pass over, however, we tend to forget that the form of an object derives from an act of creation.

To put it another way, our modern information-oriented society allows us to come into contact with an entire panoply of cultural idioms and expressions, whether in the realm of fine art or otherwise: both old and new, from every single culture that has ever existed all over the world, in a form that is instantly obvious and readily comprehensible. This state of affairs, however, also means that we can no longer return to a time when artistic creation was guided by the act and process of form-making. The medium that Takimoto has chosen to devote his artistic career to has long been associated with divine spirits, deities and Buddhist iconography in the context of Japanese history. In Japan, the materials that have been cultivated and nurtured by the country’s natural, vernacular environment and history have always been inseparably tied to the artists and craftsmen who draw on these materials for their work.

What does it mean to sculpt, to create something out of nothing? What materials should the sculptor use? Which tools and techniques should he turn to in order to impart a shape and form to his creations?
As varieties of artistic expression continue to multiply, the processes related to the act of actually making something are neglected, yielding works that have lost their “feel” and sense of texture. This, then, is perhaps what remains to be done in our age – to discover how we can recover a certain sacred or divine texture that used to be embodied by the shape and form of an artwork.

Tatsuo Majima (b. 1970, Japan)'s works are based on his peculiar interest in fusion and collision between cultural differences among modern ages. Using various media such as texts, photographs, videos and performances, Majima creates his works with unique taste of humour.

This time, Majima presents the series of movie posters all starring Tom Cruise, an icon of the Hollywood movie culture since the 80's.

The poster evokes us of three aspects - Cruise as Hollwood icon, the image of typical hero and Cruise as real person in himself. However, at the same time, it suggests to us that no one could get hold of his real identity from here. This is Majima's examination into the impossibility of portraiture; questioning where personal/national identity exists.

The work was first exhibited in 1999. This exhibition will be the sequel to that former exhibition, constructing an installation of Tom Cruise posters since 2000.

POSTALCO is the name of a design studio originally opened by Mike and Yuri Abelson in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000. It is also the brand name of their various lineups of highly practical products, most notably bags and stationery items. For this exhibition coming just over a decade since the pair shifted their base to Tokyo, Mike created a new kind of printer. He calls it a “Wheel Printer,” and the inspiration that led him to its invention was Mike’s wondering about what would happen if ink was applied to the wheels of a car or bicycle. What tracks would they leave? And if they all came together at a street intersection, just imagine the complex patterns. And so Mike set to creating a printer made with wheels. Structurally, what he devised is a configuration of different wheels attached in rows. Each wheel is inked and when a notebook or sheet of paper passes through, the wheels leave colored ink patterns. So just what patterns does it produce? Stripes? Diagonal lines? Triangles? Or maybe it prints some unintentional plaid patterns?

232nd Creative Salon
January 27 (Fri), 2012 7:10 p.m. – 8:40 p.m.
Participants: Mike and Yuri Abelson
Admission free. Reservations required. (TEL: 03-6835-2260)

Printing Demonstration:
January 17 (Tue) and February 4 (Sat), 2012
Details will be announced on the venue website.
POSTALCO’s newly invented Wheel Printer will be on display in the gallery, and Mike will be on hand to demonstrate how it actually works. The items created using the Wheel Printer, as well as POSTALCO’s other products, will also be on exhibit and available for purchase.

POSTALCO products are admired and widely sought out by people who appreciate how they came about and the way they revert to what is basic and familiar to us. We are confident that visitors will be attracted to POSTALCO’s creative style and philosophy.

We are glad to present Yoshiaki Kuribara's Fantastic Eccentric Show with Dokuro All Stars, the solo exhibition of the energetic artist Yoshiaki Kuribara to be held in the sports hall of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. Taking "theme Park" as his keyword, Kuribara will present numerous large scale works (both past work and new work) to form a highly original space within the sports hall. With support from the "Dokuro All Stars", the exhibition space will be activated through performances and film screenings. Proposing a new concept of exhibition making, utilizing a space of 622 sqm, with a height of 6.7m, it is sure to be a giant show!

Who are Dokuro All Stars?
Dokuro All Stars is a term used to refer to members of the organization "Dokuro Kogyo" of which Kuribara is also a member. Dokuro Kogyo is a new platform that aims to support artists by conveying the importance of freedom. Forming a new kind of system, its members aim to concretely realize the function of art within society by testing various different enterprises, led by Satoshi Okada, the art collector and director of MAGIC ROOM???

Taking place at the same time!
On the first floor, "3331 Gallery" will be simultaneously presenting "Yoshiaki Kuribara's Drawing Exhibition", providing the opportunity to view the drawings which Kuribara creates on a daily basis.

Mineki Murata was born in Gunma in 1979 and graduated from Tama Art University in 2005. Since then he has been giving unique performances at various exhibitions and events throughout Japan, including the inaugural Aichi Triennale in 2010. Using his own body as a medium, Murata's performances consist of actions repeated again and again in relation to other objects. Previous performances involved making ballpoint drawings on dictionaries and photocopying paper, or using crayons to scrawl over a white dress shirt that he was wearing.

For this exhibition, Murata will give performance every day throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Her career started with photograph, drawing along with the extensional experiential installation based on the viewpoint from underneath of one's feet bottom. After receiving increased recognition in Japan, she moved to New York and her work undertook a major change with the application of a top-down view. Having created new work composed of some 300 photographs taken from a high altitude, she has since participated in exhibitions at museums such as Sezon Museum of Modern Art and the National Art Center, Tokyo.

Yasuda has consistently picked out the narrow space on the top story of skyscrapers in metropolis all over the world as the standpoint for her own. While her work somewhat induces the fear of falling, they also give us the happiness of soaring high into the open sky. By presenting foremost conflicting emotions and feelings, Yasuda mildly sways us emotionally in an unquiet way. Although viewpoint in her works has been completely reversed, she has continually attempted to re-create the images according to her body and memories based on what her eyes catch in the real world.

Her basic approach stays constant. However, the new works for this exhibition show us a new horizon applying a 360-degree view around herself. The sense of distance in each scenery is presented as her physical map. The images she creates are somewhat reminiscence Japanese paintings from the middle of the Edo period, in the respect that they are not only painted simply in perspective but acting up to the memories and the actual feeling of painters.

As the title “Aerial” implies, an overhead view in the new works is brought to the fore, revealing the inwardness of the artist.

Kwan Sheung Chi (born in 1980) attracted attention for "Teapoy", the artwork made by Kwan according to his mother's memory and which visualizes family history and human relationships, included in the "Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 2005" (Hong Kong Art Museum). The videos he has been working intensively on in recent years have brought him to international attention, and have been invited to many international exhibitions, such as "Videozone V" (Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, Israel, 2010), and "Homemade video from Hong Kong" (National Center for Contemporary Art, St. Petersburg, Russia, Arad Art Museum, Romania, 2011).

The common theme in his video works is an on-going wrestle with the duality of success and failure, and achievement and defeat. For example, "Drinking a glass of hot chocolate with a folk" is a record of Kwan drinking a full glass of hot chocolate using a fork. In "Left vs. Right", he counts a winning rate of "Rock, paper, scissors" using his left hand vs. right hand. Through his work that is seemingly not advancing, we are invited to be witnesses of a life and and to come up with exit strategies out of our dualistic mind-set. The "ONE MILLION (Japanese Yen)", a new video work made for this exhibition, counts a handful of bills until one million by repeating the video in the post-production process, expressing an ironic perspective on the principle of a monetary system and money game, the economic activity without reality.

The name of the show is "Collected Works", including different works in addition to video, like a book which contains different works of an author. The "Apple Core" is a pack of apple juice. In a supermarket it is a drink, a consumer product; putting it in a gallery, people might think about how do we consume, what we're actually consuming. "Lilies" is a seemingly a bunch of lilies in a vase, but actually a collection of artificial lilies if you take a close look. Each branch is different from each other. Each factory making artificial lilies has its own concept, an ideal form of what the lily is and how it should be. The lilly collections are looking towards a common objective but none of them are the same; they all look different, they are all fake.

3 (three) consists of three artist members, Shuhei Sasaki, Hironori Kawasaki and Yoshitaro Koide. After the successful first solo exhibition at Showcase/ MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY in 2010, its art works have been presented at various showcases at overseas art fairs including Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The plastic figure dolls are nowadays found everywhere in Japan. The dolls are embodiments of characters from animations and video games, created based on virtual profiles including personalities, ages, body sizes and styles. 3(three) collects thousands of the figure dolls, breaks them into small pieces, and melts and sticks each by heating them, turning them into a block of new material.

The colors of the skin, hair, and clothes of the dolls are merged to become a mass of vividly colored patterns with the basic tone of Asian skin.

Ami Clarke is an artist whose practice often involves working with appropriated material. During extensive periods of research she responds to the material she finds mindful of the contributory factors of where and how the material she is drawn to is found.

Treating the collection of appropriated footage in a way more akin to a research project, the film: "Be Seeing You" explores the multiple perspectives afforded by film technology, and touches on relations between the audience and projected image.

The immersive environment creates a visual equivalent of certain kinds of auditory stimulation, an aural world, as M. McLuhan noted "the ear favours no particular "point of view"... "we are all enveloped by sound".

The emphasis on an experiential encounter with video that speaks perhaps of an authentic physiological experience whilst viewing, is complicated by the slippage that occurs between audio and visual affects, and the relentlessly hypnotic affect of the pulsing light.

The humour in the repeated 'takes', suggests a multitude of possibilities.

"Humour as a system of communications and as a problem of our environment - of what’s really going on ... does not deal in theory, but in immediate experience, and is often the best guide to changing perceptions. Older societies thrived on purely literary plots. They demanded story lines. Today’s humour, on the contrary, has no story line - no sequence. It is usually a compressed overlay of stories."

In a separate work she considers Julian Assange’s comments in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, where the affect of data/news being deleted from the internet, without anyone really noticing it has happened, is described as 'un-publishing'. In this way what was understood, briefly, as 'news', simply disappears.

The publication takes the premise of 'unaccountability' relating to the data stream found in this way on the internet, and more generally, the way in which there can be little certainty re data management, with the advent of digital media, to exact a broad license with the content material in her own artists publication, a 16-page text and visual work, free to take away from the exhibition.

Assange mentions that perhaps it is less difficult in the traditional print media of newspapers, to vanish away such unwanted news, as its material form will potentially still exist with a broad distribution of the paper.

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition with Amsterdam based Marijke van Warmerdam. Van Warmerdam is particularly well known for her film loops, which radiate a crystal clear simplicity. In her recent work “Face to face”, a group of macaws circle round a tree, which appears to exert a strong force of attraction on the birds. The tree trunk has an anthropoid face. Could that be the reason for all the excitement? One might believe it is, particularly when one of the macaws goes and sits on the ‘chin’ of the tree and looks straight into the tree trunk’s eyes. But is it true?

Besides this film loop Van Warmerdam will present a series of paintings based upon film stills printed on canvas. Her film loops are characterized by visual reduction, velocity, repetition and simplicity, and these characteristic elements can also be found in these paintings.

In her film stills on canvas one can see sprigs moving so fast that the flowers have become mere streaks, almost as if someone picked up a brush and smeared the blossoms. And why not reproduce by the painter’s hand that frozen moment in film and grab a brush or a piece of wood and get to work? And so the artist began to make a reverse painting with a bucket and broom of what was already present; a frozen moment.
