This is Fuyuko Matsui's first large-scale solo show at a public art museum. Her work was previously included in a group exhibition of nihonga painters at this museum in 2006.

Matsui was born in Morimachi, Shizuoka prefecture in 1974 and studied nihonga painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Her graduation work took the notion of psychological and physical pain as its starting point, and her subsequent works have centered on provocative themes such as terror, madness, narcissism, sex, birth and death.

On display will be a selection of her most representative works, drafts and rough sketches, including some 80 new pieces created expressly for this exhibition. There will also be screenings of videos and films that represent Matsui's first attempt at art direction.

Eikoh Hosoe was born in 1931 and held his first solo exhibition in 1956. Famed for his portraits of figures like Yukio Mishima and Tatsumi Hijikata, his images became representative of the postwar period. This exhibition includes many of his masterpieces that dissect the era, divided into six periods.

See gallery website for details of talk events, featuring the photographer and other culture figures such as Donald Keene.

Recognized for his artistic talents at a young age, Hiroji Noda (born in 1952) became the youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition at Minami Gallery in 1977, the year after he had graduated from Tama Art University. In the Eighties, however, NODA embarked on a variety of explorations in an effort to discover new possibilities in painting. In this exhibition, we survey the artist’s over 30-year career with 140 works that have emerged from his continually evolving approach, and examine the effect that NODA’s experiments have had on the Japanese art scene.

Noda's exploration of the essence of painting began with box-shaped forms that were in effect a kind of relief. The artist continued to develop this approach in the mid-Eighties, creating a unique painting style in which he covered the support medium with a sack-like fabric. Then in the Nineties, Noda added further depth to his work by sewing, folding back, and layered the canvas. But around 2000, he gradually turned to a flat foundation, and transformed the picture plane with the freewheeling depiction of unusual images. Finally, in recent years, Noda has created series based on specific themes, and focused on combinations of works while also placing greater emphasis on the manner in which they are displayed.

Noda has remained actively engaged in showing his work, but there has rarely been an opportunity to survey his entire career, from the early period to the present. We hope that this exhibition will provide greater insight into how Noda has developed his artistic philosophy as well as shedding light on how his ideas are transformed into actual works. And in addition to tracing the trajectory of this outstanding artist’s career, we hope to encourage reflection on future directions in painting.

Yumeji Takehisa was a well-known “Taisho Romantic” painter and poet. In 1914, a shop focusing on paper crafts, stationery and daily goods designed by Takehisa called Minato-ya opened in Nihombashi, becoming an influential tastemaker in the field of design. This exhibition looks back on the early days of Takehisa’s career as a painter, introducing viewers to the social customs and culture of the Taisho era (1912-1926).

The shadow of a small person stands still on the horizon line. A person walks on a roof. A leaf floats on water and light glistens from it. The place in Japan closest to space, Mt. Fuji — what’s visible from its peak.

Small spaces and big, going back and forth between the microscopic and macroscopic with an original point of view, Rika Noguchi photographs a world overflowing with wonder. Choosing a subject that touches upon the riddle of the planet and its human dwellers, with the transparent quality of her color palette and elegance, she demonstrates a power of expression that is rich in poetic sentiment, garnering high praise both in Japan and abroad. When Noguchi started exhibiting her work in the first half of the 1990s in Japan, use of compact cameras was broadly adopted, affecting big changes in photography. This time was considered to be when a new generation for photographers emerged. Among these new artists Noguchi got a lot of attention early on for her independent style and photographs that pursued the domain of sight. In the almost twenty years of artistic activity since, her work has been exhibited in many international contemporary art exhibitions.

The stance of Noguchi's creative process is to approach the freeness of photography as a medium, which relates to the eager quest of the new work included in this current exhibition.

Takeshi Kitamura (b. 1935) is designated a Living National Treasure or a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for his mastery over the techniques called ra and nishiki (brocade). Equating the formation of textile with expression, Kitamura has used the intricately intertwining warp within the thickness of about one millimeter to produce cloth that impresses us with its quiet movement and depth. This show introduces Kitamura’s works spanning his entire career to lead the viewers into a world of woven structure with rich contrast.

Immediately after World War II, Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) altered the concept of painting significantly by means of an original style and technique in which he sprinkled paint all over a canvas spread on the floor. The art he produced during his brief 44-year long lifetime enabled him to become the first American artist to win truly international fame and today he is recognized all over the world as a cultural hero of the United States.

Although Pollock has also been highly acclaimed in Japan, exhibitions fully covering his work have not yet been held here. This exhibition is held in commemoration of the centennial of Pollock’s birth.

Comprised of works dating from his art student years, the acme during which he established his fame, and the later years when he was tormented by the decline in his creative ability, it is the first major exhibition to be held in Japan tracing the great marks he left on the art world.

There are works from foreign collections, including major works belonging to the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Iran and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Together with all the works by Pollock that are currently known to be housed in Japan, approximately seventy exhibits will be gathered under one roof.

TPAM is an international platform for performing arts.

It is a place for “Meeting” consisting of a discussion/presentation section for the improvement and development of activities in the performing arts sector through networking professionals and a performance section for discovering and introducing works that are responsive to the contemporary reality.

It has almost been a year since the 3/11. The disaster of the earthquake and tsunamis and the accident of the nuclear power plant have been undermining the condition of survival and the structure of society. TPAM in Yokohama 2012 tries to be a response to the situation in the belief that performing arts relate deeply to the fundamentals.

Based in Singapore, Ho Tzu Nyen presents his works throughout the world—in Hong Kong, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and more—and he has gained prominence at numerous international Biennale and international film festivals. Ho participated in the 2011 Venice Biennale as a representative of Singapore, exhibiting his new work "The Cloud of Unknowing" (2011 - 2012), which was the talk of the town.

Ho reveals the imaginary that lies dormant as shared memory in historical fact and reality. His expression spans myriad planes, working mainly with video in installations, theatre, participatory projects, improvisational collaboration with musicians, and more. Ho has recently been exploring the relationship between image and sound in particular, and by exhibiting "The Cloud of Unknowing" anew as a four-channel video sound installation at this first solo exhibition in Japan, he aims to have the audience experience changes of space in the story caused by synergies of the video and sound. His "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2006), and "Newton" (2009) are also exhibited. His poetic and theatrical world presents the lessons and philosophy comprised by history and legends, and it offers the opportunity to consider what reality is.

This will be the first major Tokyo retrospective exhibition of the work of Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005), who has recently attracted increased attention for the role she played as one of the foremost female members of the postwar avant-garde artist group, the Gutai Art Association. Exhibits will include ‘Work (Bell)’ (1955), in which sound races around the exhibition space, the ‘Electric Dress’ (1956) that she wore for several performances, and numerous paintings, collages and video records, presenting an overview of the pioneering activities of this artist who combined performance with the plastic arts over a period of fifty years.

See website for more details on related talks, screenings, and performances.

From the start, each year the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions has posed the question, “What is an image?” and chosen a theme that suggests an answer to this question. It was, however, no easy task to think about an appropriate theme or envision the shape that this year’s festival might take less than a year since Japan was shaken to its roots by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Tohoku region in northeast Japan. Confronted with images of such overwhelming power, images that exposed the fragility of the foundations on which images are built, it came to us at last that there was really only one choice, to make our theme the physicality of images. In retrospect it seems so obvious, in times like these we had to start over again with this most simple and basic of questions. It would, at the same time direct our eyes once again to the complex and diverse possibilities inherent in images.

The theme of the fourth Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions is, then, “How Physical”. To illuminate the physicality of images, we begin with their practical aspect, then, through the works we present, press on into the riches and depth that images offer. Before we raise questions about the themes and cultural significance of images, asking what images show us or why these particular images were taken, we turn first to the technologies, the skills, the tools, the activities, the means of distribution that make images possible. At the same time, we recognize the presence in images of times and spaces that only exist as images and the power of images to affect us viscerally. Our aim is to savor deeply forms of creative expression in which the distinctive physicality of images is brought to life. We also see this as an opportunity to reconsider the issues of the day not abstractly, but concretely by considering the physical processes, equipment, technologies and economic environment in which images are captured, preserved and passed down to us.

The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions takes full advantage of the space in which it is held to provide an opportunity for those who create, connect, and receive images to come together to enjoy the works on display and examine from many angles the physical aspects of images past and present. We hope that it becomes for everyone involved a comprehensive and future-oriented celebration of the “physical making” involved in imaging and visual creative expression.

This exhibition is the largest exhibition in the history of the Swiss contemporary artists Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger, known for their series of dynamic site specific installations.

Since 1997, Gerda and Jorg have been working together and presented wide range of works including installation, collage, photograph, painting and sculpture. Among them, their site specific installations, created in accordance to the specific space, are well known. They often reveal the invisible and unknown cultural significance of the exhibiting site by the artists actually living there and communicating with local people during the creating process.

The installation usually holds a poetic ambiguity which is always full of ideas about how our world can be. Gerda and Jorg have strong interests in human activities, mysteries and wonders of life, in the relationships between body and mind and the surrounding environment. Those interests are reflected to their creations in the forms of various dimensions that the work retains; cultural, psychological, scientific, biological and social. It enables viewers to relate and to interpret in any way they like. Also beds and chairs in the installations help visitors to enjoy seeing, staying, and being a part of it comfortably, and suggest experience for the senses.

At Art Tower Mito Contemporary Art gallery, Gerda and Jorg will present both their latest and past works created from 1998, which have previously only been introduced fragmentarily in Japan. It includes new and never-before-seen works. They will stay in Mito for more than one month and explore the current environmental and social situations after the massive earthquake on 3.11, and create their latest installations under the theme of power sources. It is not only about bringing the world into shape, but making the latest Japan cultural map by revealing the social and cultural phenomena not visible to people inside.

During this exhibition period, one year will be marked since the earthquake. Showcasing a panoramic view on the artists’ over ten years of history and their latest activities, this exhibition will be a power source to each and everyone of the viewers.

In his debut work, House in a Forest (2006), Hasegawa designed a gabled attic space supported by struts under a gabled roof, creating a wholly unique spatial sensation.

By placing a large table in the center of his next work, House in Sakuradai (2006), he proposed a new relationship between the individual rooms and the living room. More recently, in Apartment in Nerima (2010), Hasegawa equipped every unit with a large terrace with its own distinctive form to incorporate signs of the city into the building. In addition, in Pilotis in a Forest (2010), he elevated the living room on pilotis with a floor height of 6.5 meters, and supported it with nine thin columns.

By integrating the surrounding forest with the work, Hasegawa proposed a bold spatial structure, and received much acclaim for realizing a work in which a comfortable link was created between the resident and the house, and the architecture and the environment.

In the now underway Belfry in Ishinomaki (set to completed in 2012), Hasegawa and a group of volunteers are planning to donate a small belfry to a kindergarden in the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, which suffered extensive damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The work is imbued with the thought that the sound of the bell will serve as a symbol of hope in local recovery efforts.
Through the scale models and sketches that were developed in the planning for each of the eleven projects that Hasegawa has been involved with in the past, in this exhibition, we hope to convey the relationship between the architect's works and the surrounding environment. In the gallery's courtyard, Hasegawa will also erect Belfry in Ishinomaki, which will then be moved to Ishinomaki when the exhibition concludes.

While suggesting a variety of real conditions that Hasegawa faces in his projects, the title of the exhibition, Study in Real, expresses the architect's view of the future in which while actively considering and repeatedly studying, he attempts to cultivate himself and improve the quality of his architecture.

Ami Clarke is an artist whose practice often involves working with appropriated material. During extensive periods of research she responds to the material she finds mindful of the contributory factors of where and how the material she is drawn to is found.

Treating the collection of appropriated footage in a way more akin to a research project, the film: "Be Seeing You" explores the multiple perspectives afforded by film technology, and touches on relations between the audience and projected image.

The immersive environment creates a visual equivalent of certain kinds of auditory stimulation, an aural world, as M. McLuhan noted "the ear favours no particular "point of view"... "we are all enveloped by sound".

The emphasis on an experiential encounter with video that speaks perhaps of an authentic physiological experience whilst viewing, is complicated by the slippage that occurs between audio and visual affects, and the relentlessly hypnotic affect of the pulsing light.

The humour in the repeated 'takes', suggests a multitude of possibilities.

"Humour as a system of communications and as a problem of our environment - of what’s really going on ... does not deal in theory, but in immediate experience, and is often the best guide to changing perceptions. Older societies thrived on purely literary plots. They demanded story lines. Today’s humour, on the contrary, has no story line - no sequence. It is usually a compressed overlay of stories."

In a separate work she considers Julian Assange’s comments in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, where the affect of data/news being deleted from the internet, without anyone really noticing it has happened, is described as 'un-publishing'. In this way what was understood, briefly, as 'news', simply disappears.

The publication takes the premise of 'unaccountability' relating to the data stream found in this way on the internet, and more generally, the way in which there can be little certainty re data management, with the advent of digital media, to exact a broad license with the content material in her own artists publication, a 16-page text and visual work, free to take away from the exhibition.

Assange mentions that perhaps it is less difficult in the traditional print media of newspapers, to vanish away such unwanted news, as its material form will potentially still exist with a broad distribution of the paper.

Since the 1990s, Lee Bul has built an international career as one of the leading contemporary artists from Asia. Her oeuvre is dominated by sculptures that demonstrate a mastery of materials and techniques, including her celebrated Cyborgs and Anagrams series, hybrid machine-and-organic forms referencing critical theory as well as dystopian cinematic worlds; karaoke "pods" that evoke space capsules for eternal sleep; and glittering, spectral gyres and cityscapes that seem to be falling into ruin. For over twenty years, it could be said that Lee, whose practice has spanned her home country's transition from military dictatorship to democracy, has been on a quest for an elusive something, the ultimate physical form perhaps, or the ideal society.

While showcasing her major works in the four sections "Ephemeral Presence," "Beyond Human," "Utopia and Dreamscape" and "From Me, Belongs to You Only," in the "Studio" section this exhibition will present the drawings and models that also form the font of her ideas. The subtitle "From Me, Belongs to You Only" is also a message from Lee: her attempt to find the "something" for which she is constantly searching in a personal relationship with each individual viewer.

Events:
Artist Talk (Japanese-Korean-English simultaneous interpretation available)
Lee Bul, who will visit Japan for the exhibition, discusses her own artistic activities over the last two decades.
Date: 19:00-20:30 Saturday 4 February, 2012
Venue: Academyhills49, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower 49F
Capacity: 150 (bookings required)
Admission: General ¥1,000 MAMC Member free

Symposium (Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available)
Seeking an Ideal Society
In her series "Mon grand récit," and other works, Lee Bul has pursued an ideal vision of society with reference to the utopian theories and social political theories of the 20th century. The South Korea of the late 1980s, where she began her work as an artist, was experiencing a time of both hope and uncertainty as the country shifted towards democracy and existing value systems were being shaken up. The panelists at this symposium will be Lee Bul, who will visit Japan for the exhibition; Richard Noble a leading Western researcher into utopian theories; and Takahashi Toru, a scholar on cyborg theory, who considers future societies with reference to cyborg technology really does have the potential to create 'ultimate bodies.' These panelists will discuss Lee's artwork in the context of the 20th century, out of which utopian theories were born. In the present age of confusion, we invite you to come and think about the visions for ideal society that each of them describe.
Speakers: Lee Bul, Richard Noble (Head of Art Department at Goldsmiths College, University of London), Takahashi Toru (Professor, Waseda University)
Moderator: Kataoka Mami (Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum)
Date: 14:00-16:00 Sunday 5 February, 2012
Venue: Academyhills49, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower 49F
Capacity: 150 (bookings required)
Admission: General ¥1,000; MAMC Member free

Curator Talk (Japanese only)
