Born in Tokyo in 1880, Eiho Hirezaki became a disciple of ukiyo-e painter Toshihide Migita at the age of 17. Distinguishing himself as a nihonga painter, Hirezaki also made his mark as an illustrator and later came to dedicate his career to book illustrations.

Working for various magazines and newspapers, Hirezaki won many plaudits especially for his illustrations of sumo wrestlers featured in Tokyo Asahi Shimbun. Although his name was once forgotten after his passing, recent years have seen the reevaluation of his pioneering contributions to the genre.

Through a total of 350 works including previously unexhibited pieces, this exhibition looks back on the feat of this singular artist.

"By using simple animations drawn with a pencil, I want to control and move everything that appears within each frame." Going back to the roots of animation, Hayao Miyazaki created the feature-length animation "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea." To increase the visual quality of the picture, the background scenes were made more detailed and lifelike, and characters were drawn with even, controlled lines. While digital animation has made it simple and easy to manipulate images, this was a challenge he took in order to rethink the notion of what it means to draw.

This exhibition reveals how the movie "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" was created by Miyazaki and his team, who strove to exploit the best characteristics of hand drawing in the animated film. They focused on the meticulous depiction of the lively movements of living things using thick pencilled lines. This exhibition traces the story of Ponyo, and focuses on several scenes in particular that show how they were created.

Also on view are a large number of illustrations created for the animation, key frames and in-betweens that visitors can actually pick up and examine. Sculptures of Ponyo and large fish are also on display.

The "Tofu Oyako" series of figurines aimed at adults made a splash back in the late 1990s with their unconventional choice of motif. Devil Robots sparked a new craze for "yuru-chara" figures, and followed the tofu kids up with the hit Kubrick and capsule toy figures, breathing new life into the toy industry.

This exhibition is an attempt to unravel the myths behind Devil Robot toys and to understand them as works of art. On display are key toy collections, hand-drawn rough sketches that formed the basis for manga and anime based on these toys, as well as various goods and products for sale.

2nd installment in Gallery Speak For's "History" series.
