Using three floors of the main building, this permanent exhibition presents about 200 to 250 pieces selected from our museum's collection of about 9,200 works, including Japanese- and Western-style paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures, to provide a historical overview on modern Japanese art from the beginning of the 20th century to present. The show also includes some overseas works related to Japanese pieces. Many of the exhibits are largely replaced five times a year. In addition to the historical approach, a smaller show, "Topic in Focus" is given in each exhibition period to shed new light on modern Japanese art.

The permanent collection is displayed in regular rotation. Please check the museum's website for details.

This exhibition spotlights the work of seven contemporary artists who burn with a passion for drawing and for representing all kinds of physical phenomena as well as the spiritual world that surrounds us by using their own eyes and hands and, moreover, with reference to the works mainly from our own collection, it makes an attempt to approach hidden relationships between abstraction and form in the visual arts. Tomoo Gokita makes a strong impression on those who view his works through his human figures drawn in monochrome. Anders Edstrom, a photographer from Sweden, is trying to capture things that are invisible to eye. In the paintings of Jun Tsunoda, soft colours and delicate forms melt on the picture surface. Shingo Francis seeks the essence of light on a calm and profound colour plane. Niro Nozawa dynamically draws various scenes reflected on the surface of water. Yuji Akatsuka recalls within the picture space the imagined scenery of his distant memories. And Tamihito Yoshikawa seeks out colour forms in the texture of his solid oil painting.

In concert with the artists mentioned above, the exhibition also features works by older artists who influenced them to a certain extent, including Monet, Picasso, Braque, Morandi, Sam Francis and Cy Twombly. Although each of these artists belongs to a different culture and era, we would be gratified if the viewer is able to grasp an essential theme of modern art that has been inherited by each of these individual works, namely, "how the essence of the object can be represented," through the interaction with the exhibited works.

James Welling was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1951. He studied sculpture at Carnegie Mellon University and later graduated from California Institute of the Arts, where he worked mainly with video. He relocated to New York in 1978, where he started his photographic projects, and again to California in 1995. Today, his subject matters and methods are wide, ranging from documentary subjects stemming from his personal interests and history (his great-great-grandmother’s diary, lace factories, landscapes of Connecticut, architectural structures) to everyday objects such as aluminum, drapery, gelatin, and flowers that have been arranged abstractly. Employing both analog and digital methods, he pursues the photographic medium in its entirety.

This exhibition will include Welling’s new project capturing the landscapes of Cushing, Maine and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania that surrounded the home and studio of Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and were much of the subject matter of the American realist painter’s works. Welling, an ardent fan of Wyeth particularly in his formative years, visited the two northeastern towns to photograph what remained of the painter’s environs.

"When you go to Wyeth’s places, an unsettling phenomenon occurs. You see the paintings before you in pieces, fragmented, with more things Wyeth removed and reordered in painting. But the place is distinct and still the same place in the painting."

Welling’s photographs convey precisely the distance and the closeness revealed through this phenomenon that occurs in the lapse of time and location.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is pleased to announce a new exhibition, "Irving Penn and Issey Miyake: Visual Dialogue," opening to the public on September 16, 2011. The exhibition will focus on the collaborative work of legendary photographer Irving Penn and renowned designer Issey Miyake.

Issey Miyake's first encounter with Irving Penn was in 1983. On assignment for American Vogue, Penn photographed Miyake's clothing for an editorial feature. The perspective in these photographs startled Miyake as he suddenly saw his designs through a totally new set of eyes. As a direct result, Miyake asked Penn to photograph his designs. Over the next 13 years, from 1987 through the Autumn/Winter Collection of 1999, Irving Penn photographed Issey Miyake's biennial collections. Miyake never attended the photo sessions but instead chose to entrust the vision of his clothes entirely to Penn. The unusual decision to offer Penn complete freedom gave rise to an incredible "visual dialogue" between the two artists. The creative pulse of Penn and Miyake's unique collaboration had a lasting effect on their artistic visions. In the end, Penn made over 250 photographs of Miyake's designs, many of which appear in collection posters, were published in art books, or exhibited in museums and cultural institutions.

Under the direction of Midori Kitamura, Miyake's trusted colleague, and an installation design by architect Shigeru Ban, this exhibition features both the individual and collaborative work of Irving Penn and Issey Miyake. In addition to large scale projections of collection photographs by Penn, an animated film by Pascal Roulin with original drawings by Michael Crawford, and Issey Miyake collection posters exhibited collectively for the first time, original photographic prints made by Penn will also be on display along with his preliminary drawings for his photographs of Miyake's designs.

2011 was an eventful, newsworthy year that saw the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, democratic movements in the Middle East, and the Nadeshiko Japan women's World Cup soccer victory. This exhibition looks back on the past year with a showcase of some 300 press photos taken by journalists affiliated with the Tokyo Press Photographers Association. An additional section of photos related to the March 11 earthquake will be added in mid-March.

The shadow of a small person stands still on the horizon line. A person walks on a roof. A leaf floats on water and light glistens from it. The place in Japan closest to space, Mt. Fuji — what’s visible from its peak.

Small spaces and big, going back and forth between the microscopic and macroscopic with an original point of view, Rika Noguchi photographs a world overflowing with wonder. Choosing a subject that touches upon the riddle of the planet and its human dwellers, with the transparent quality of her color palette and elegance, she demonstrates a power of expression that is rich in poetic sentiment, garnering high praise both in Japan and abroad. When Noguchi started exhibiting her work in the first half of the 1990s in Japan, use of compact cameras was broadly adopted, affecting big changes in photography. This time was considered to be when a new generation for photographers emerged. Among these new artists Noguchi got a lot of attention early on for her independent style and photographs that pursued the domain of sight. In the almost twenty years of artistic activity since, her work has been exhibited in many international contemporary art exhibitions.

The stance of Noguchi's creative process is to approach the freeness of photography as a medium, which relates to the eager quest of the new work included in this current exhibition.

The situation of Japan changed drastically on 11th March 2011. Several problems existing in this country since a long time ago have again been put into question by a natural disaster multiplied by human mistakes in the Tohoku district. We now realize our deep responsibility to the happiness in our own lives and we need to understand more the real situation we are faced with.

This project hopes to remind us of the present Tokyo situation by revealing its beauty, potential, value, charms, uniqueness and also problems. Features 100 photographer's "Tokyo Scapes", the exhibition presenting a "grand picture" of the city of Tokyo.

Her career started with photograph, drawing along with the extensional experiential installation based on the viewpoint from underneath of one's feet bottom. After receiving increased recognition in Japan, she moved to New York and her work undertook a major change with the application of a top-down view. Having created new work composed of some 300 photographs taken from a high altitude, she has since participated in exhibitions at museums such as Sezon Museum of Modern Art and the National Art Center, Tokyo.

Yasuda has consistently picked out the narrow space on the top story of skyscrapers in metropolis all over the world as the standpoint for her own. While her work somewhat induces the fear of falling, they also give us the happiness of soaring high into the open sky. By presenting foremost conflicting emotions and feelings, Yasuda mildly sways us emotionally in an unquiet way. Although viewpoint in her works has been completely reversed, she has continually attempted to re-create the images according to her body and memories based on what her eyes catch in the real world.

Her basic approach stays constant. However, the new works for this exhibition show us a new horizon applying a 360-degree view around herself. The sense of distance in each scenery is presented as her physical map. The images she creates are somewhat reminiscence Japanese paintings from the middle of the Edo period, in the respect that they are not only painted simply in perspective but acting up to the memories and the actual feeling of painters.

As the title “Aerial” implies, an overhead view in the new works is brought to the fore, revealing the inwardness of the artist.

This exhibition is the largest exhibition in the history of the Swiss contemporary artists Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger, known for their series of dynamic site specific installations.

Since 1997, Gerda and Jorg have been working together and presented wide range of works including installation, collage, photograph, painting and sculpture. Among them, their site specific installations, created in accordance to the specific space, are well known. They often reveal the invisible and unknown cultural significance of the exhibiting site by the artists actually living there and communicating with local people during the creating process.

The installation usually holds a poetic ambiguity which is always full of ideas about how our world can be. Gerda and Jorg have strong interests in human activities, mysteries and wonders of life, in the relationships between body and mind and the surrounding environment. Those interests are reflected to their creations in the forms of various dimensions that the work retains; cultural, psychological, scientific, biological and social. It enables viewers to relate and to interpret in any way they like. Also beds and chairs in the installations help visitors to enjoy seeing, staying, and being a part of it comfortably, and suggest experience for the senses.

At Art Tower Mito Contemporary Art gallery, Gerda and Jorg will present both their latest and past works created from 1998, which have previously only been introduced fragmentarily in Japan. It includes new and never-before-seen works. They will stay in Mito for more than one month and explore the current environmental and social situations after the massive earthquake on 3.11, and create their latest installations under the theme of power sources. It is not only about bringing the world into shape, but making the latest Japan cultural map by revealing the social and cultural phenomena not visible to people inside.

During this exhibition period, one year will be marked since the earthquake. Showcasing a panoramic view on the artists’ over ten years of history and their latest activities, this exhibition will be a power source to each and everyone of the viewers.
