Yozo Hamaguchi was born as the third son to the Yamasa soy sauce magnate Gihei Hamaguchi, a collector of Southern School paintings who also studied painting himself. Yozo developed the unique mezzotint copperplate engraving method to produce masterful works of art that have won him many admiring fans. In 1996, he returned to Japan after spending extended periods of time in Paris and San Francisco. In accordance with his wishes, the collection of art that he brought back to Japan with him was used to found this museum.

Using three floors of the main building, this permanent exhibition presents about 200 to 250 pieces selected from our museum's collection of about 9,200 works, including Japanese- and Western-style paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures, to provide a historical overview on modern Japanese art from the beginning of the 20th century to present. The show also includes some overseas works related to Japanese pieces. Many of the exhibits are largely replaced five times a year. In addition to the historical approach, a smaller show, "Topic in Focus" is given in each exhibition period to shed new light on modern Japanese art.

The permanent collection is displayed in regular rotation. Please check the museum's website for details.

At a time when the Impressionists were concerned with how to portray landscapes and physical states of the outside world, the symbolist painter Odilon Redon (1840-1916) instead turned inwards to explore the infinite possibilities presented by his dreams. This exhibition offers viewers an overview of Redon’s fantastical visions through a selection of 130 works that also include pieces by artists who were profoundly influenced by him, such as Maurice Denis and Emile Bernard.

A particular highlight is the first public viewing of “Grand Bouquet”, his largest pastel painting that was recently acquired from an old chateau in France.

Born in Tatebayashi in Gunma Prefecture, Yoshio Fujimaki (1911-1935?) suddenly went missing at the age of twenty-four, leaving artworks that cast a striking splendor on the world of sosaku hanga (creative prints) in Japan. Focusing mainly on the districts of Ueno and Asakusa, Fujimaki depicted landscapes of Tokyo in the 1930s, a decade after the Great Kanto Earthquake. This exhibition surveys 200 works including woodcut prints, drawings, Hakubyo-emaki (plain-drawing scrolls), and related materials from his life. Animated images of Hakubyo-emaki are projected throughout the exhibition to reveal the scenes described in the scrolls.

This exhibition focuses on Noh masks and costumes, drawn from the museum’s collections, and considers the “profound and subtle beauty” of this uniquely Japanese art form. The Okina and Jyô masks, with their personification of deities, the vengeful god seen in demon masks, the ghostly realm seen in masks representing departed spirits, and the dreamlike world of masks of men and women, young and old, are some of the masks that inhabit the fantastic world of Noh. This exhibition features 54 masks from the Important Cultural Property ex-Kongô Family collection of Noh masks, along with Noh costumes, instruments and song books from the Mitsui families.

Also, the master Noh mask carver Mr. Hashioka Kazumichi has graciously presented eight Noh masks and 100 volumes of Noh song book (Genna-uzuki-bon) to the museum. These precious works have been on deposit at the museum since 1991, and with the expectation of their being presented to the museum upon the occasion of this exhibition, we expedited the donation process to coincide with this event. The Hashioka donation includes masks not in the Mitsui collection, such as Fukai and Chichi-no-jyô, and thus will further develop the range of the museum’s Noh mask collection. This exhibition marks the debut showing of the Hashioka works, bringing the exhibition total to approximately 100 works.

This exhibition looks at the development of the tower through the Edo and Meiji periods, introducing three key examples in the cities of Paris, Tokyo and Osaka - the Eiffel Tower, Ryōunkaku and Tsutenkaku. The twentieth century has seen new landmarks, such as Tokyo Tower and the second Tsutenkaku, both of which feature among around the 380 Japanese and French exhibits.

People today are greatly interested in celebrities such as actors and entertainers from television and cinema, or athletes and sports players. This was also the same for Edo people and they cheered kabuki actors who made a defiant gesture on stage, got excited about sumo wrestlers on the playing field, and had a longing for high-ranking courtesans in the Yoshiwara district. Image of these Edo "stars" were often depicted in ukiyoe woodblock prints. People who couldn’t see actually these celebrities may have felt close to them by seeing these prints.

This exhibition will focus on various celebrities who animated the city of Edo, including kabuki actors like Ichikawa Danjūrō and Onoe Kikugorō, legendary sumo wrestler Tanikaze, beautiful high-ranking courtesan (Ōishi) Kuranosuke who was known for the Genroku Akō Incident, and Ashikaga Mitsuuji, who is the fictive main character in the bestselling novel “Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji”.

Rat Hole Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of the late artist Jack Goldstein (1945-2003). Jack Goldstein’s performances, films, paintings, and sound works of the late 1970’s and early 80’s helped define the early stages of post-modernist art. A leading member of the Pictures Generation in New York that initiated a paradigm shift in art focusing on the critical examination of images, he has served as a major influence on many artists who came after him and has been called one of the most important artist’s artists in the last 30 years. On view from January 25 until March 25, this exhibition marks the first time for Jack Goldstein’s work to be shown in Japan.

Jack Goldstein was born in 1945 in Montreal, Canada and moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was a teenager. Goldstein received his initial training at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and then went on to earn a master’s degree as a member of the inaugural class at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 1972. During his time at CalArts, he was a student of and teaching assistant to John Baldessari, where the primary focus of Baldessari’s famous “post-studio-art” class was the analytical investigation of imagery produced by the mass media.

Goldstein created a number of minimalist sculptures early on in his career, but soon turned to performance and film. During the 1970s, Goldstein divided his time between Los Angeles and New York, and from 1973 he began to produce a group of color films using professional technicians and special effects from the film and entertainment industry. With flashes of color and spectacularization undermining the iconic architecture of the image and the “place” of the viewer, these films were interrogations of media, technology, and spectacle, showing the artist’s fascination with appropriated Pop culture and Hollywood imagery. One of the most famous of these color films is "The Jump" (1978), a twenty-six second loop film projected onto a red painted wall, which will be shown in the exhibition at Rat Hole Gallery and was also screened at last year’s Venice Biennale. In "The Jump", made using altered footage taken from Leni Riefenstahl's documentary of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Olympia, the image of a somersaulting high board diver is rotoscoped, tinted gold, scattered with stars, and placed against a void-like black background, out of which the figure repeatedly dives. Goldstein’s use of the rotoscoping technique strips the image of all identifying references, and the element of spectacle overpowers physical matter. Along with other members of the Pictures Generation, which takes its name from the landmark 1977 “Pictures” exhibition at the Artist’s Space in New York City and also included artists Robert Longo, Sherrie Levine, Troy Brauntuch, Goldstein’s examination of the image was based on an attitude of conceptual distance, in reaction to the extreme dominance of technology and media in post-war American society.

In 1976, Goldstein commenced with a new body of work, "the records". These were colored vinyl records of sound recordings sourced from commercial archives that conjured intense visuals with titles such as “Burning Forest” or “Wrestling Cats.” These audio works served as a further abstraction to his films and were also designed as “images” to be installed on a wall without the possibility to play them. Goldstein conceived his records as both sound carriers and visual objects, saying “the records, they’re sounds as image, so I saw them as pictures.” Altogether, Goldstein produced eight record works, each of which differed with regard to design, size, and playing time. Out of the eight works, three consist of a series and one of these series, A Suite of Nine 7-Inch Records, will be on view in this exhibition.

Jack Goldstein’s oeuvre spans sculpture, performance, film, sound, photography, and painting. Central in his work however are primarily the 16mm films and records made in the 1970s, which can be considered among the finest examples of post-conceptual work from this time period. This exhibition will provide a unique and rare opportunity to view among Jack Goldstein’s most famous film works - a selection of ten short 16mm films from the period 1974-1978 including "The Jump", "MGM", "Shane", and "Butterflies" - as well as a display of his record series.
