<br /> at Ginza Nikon Salon
<br />Media: Photography
<br />(2008-04-30 - 2008-05-13)</p>
<p>The award-winning works in this exhibition come from the photo exhibition "Hiromi Tsuchida's Japan" (Dec 2007-Feb 2008) held at the Museum of Photography, Tokyo, which showcased the life and artistic pursuits of their artists, organized into three sections: "The Japanese," "Hiroshima," and "Self-portraits".
"The Japanese" is the result of an extended exploration of Japanese vernacular culture- and local customs in "God of Customs" (1968-74), cities and the era of rapid economic growth in postwar Japan, "Counting Sand" (1975-89), the heady days of the bubble economy in "Party" (1980-90), the collapse of the bubble in "New: Counting Sand," (1995-2004), and the continuation to "God of Customs" (1980-2004), that took as its emblem the festivals of Japan. Part II, "Hiroshima," features "Hiroshima 1945-79", an account tracing the fates of children of the atomic disaster, as well as "Hiroshima- Monument" (1979-83), "Hiroshima- Collection" (1982-94), and Hiroshima 3. Part III, "Self-portraits," features the face of the artist, taken everyday since 1986, collected in a video work of four minutes twenty seconds.
Since the late 1960s, the artist has pursued a singularly unique vision and clear concept in his work, privileging self-expression and thorough documentation as his working principles, in addition to giving expression to experimental approaches.
This exhibition of award-winning work will display pieces from Part 1 of "Hiromi Tsuchida's Japan" -"God of Customs", "Counting Sand," and "New: Counting Sand", "God of Customs: Continued," as well as from Part III, "Self-portraits."</p>

<p>The China Advertising Festival is the most influential of its kind in the Chinese advertising industry. The first edition was organized in 1986 with the permission of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and has since traveled to many cities within China. The aim of the festival is to raise the overall level of the advertising industry and promote exchange and cooperation between Chinese and international businesses in a wide variety of areas. The award winners on display have been stringently selected by a wide panel of Chinese and international experts and are now open for general public exhibition. The 14th edition was held last September in Qingdao City, Shandong province, communicating to all the vitality and creativity of this burgeoning arm of the Chinese economy.</p>

<p>A. R. Penck was born in the former East Germany. His work is rooted in primitive motifs and old representational symbols and words. Despite a large-scale solo exhibition of his work that was held at the Setagaya Art Museum in 1997-8, his work is still comparatively little known in Japan. This exhibition, in cooperation with his principal gallery in Cologne, Galerie Michael Werner, will present a selection of Penck's work, focusing particularly on his stick figures, with work from the 1970s to the present.</p>

<p>It has been 10 years since the opening of his workshop in Nerima, Tokyo. More than just a workspace and atelier, though, Yashima combined his living quarters with his ceramic practice in a single space. The reason for this is Yashima's gourmandizing tendencies, which feed off of and in turn stimulate his work, inspiring him to create beautiful vessels to serve food on.
This exhibition, held in a book gallery, is Yashima's attempt at creating a certain impression of a work from a story. It was a much more enjoyable experience than he anticipated. Bit by bit, his work began to take on a whiff of the narrative, surrounded by all these wonderful stories arrayed on shelves standing alongside his pottery.</p>

The thread was dyed realistically by referring to CT image scans of animal models conducted at a scientific-technological facility.</p>

<p>This artist has gained a broad fan base for her depictions of mysterious scenes lurking in daily urban scenes. This is her first solo exhibition comprising large scale paintings. Sleeping people can be found in her works of parks and highways, as the title indicates. These sleeping people are all completely exposed and sleeping as if gazing at the endless sky above. Her paintings are composed of bold colors and express a mysterious world, balanced between suggested disorder and a premonition of quietude to follow.</p>

<p>The human figures depicted in the works of Tai Ogawa are far from what we could conceivably call human beings - rather, they are mere motifs that are often imbued with animalistic qualities. The use of vivid colors in these images of "human beings" emphasizes their monstrous quality, suggesting the cruel, possibly barbaric side of humanity. Ogawa renders abnormality into visible form, undermining what could be behind what we see, and how we appear. This is Ogawa's first solo exhibition at this gallery, presenting a series of works consisting of cutout faces.

Opening Party: April 5th from 20:00</p>

<p>A selection of 47 items that reflect the new landscape of Claska will be on display at Gallery &amp; Shop "DO" - inheriting the past with sights set on the future, people and the objects that surround them, craftsmanship and artisanal skill. Taking the theme of "contemporary Japanese" style, fresh-feeling products that represent the best of Japanese sensibilities will be displayed - from precisely-wrought crafts by master artisans to industrial products assembled on factory lines and cutting edge software. You might even say that the talented people behind these products are themselves the best "product" Japan has to offer. Or, taking another spin on the issue, that "Japan" is a composite of all these different products.

Also on display:
"Oumi hemp cloth, from the Edo era to the present"
The Oumi hemp industry boasts a proud 500 years of tradition. Hemp researcher and expert Shinichiro Yoshida will illustrate the history of hemp woven into cloth using traditional artisanal techniques, selecting and displaying "white"-themed products in both Edo and contemporary styles.</p>

<br />(2008-04-05 - 2008-05-18)</p>
<p>During the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate was patron to artists from the Kano and Sumiyoshi schools as well as folk etching and ukiyo-e artists, all of whom were frequently commissioned for work. Before long, an artistic exchange that transcended the boundaries between warrior and commoner began to gain momentum, and many masterpieces emerged from a process of mutual inspiration among artists of different stripes, contributing to the lively flowering of Edo artistic culture.
In this exhibition, pieces from the museum's collection that reflected both public and private will be on display. In addition, folding screens will be on view at the "zashiki (Japanese tatami room) corner."

<br />(2008-04-22 - 2008-05-18)</p>
<p>Keith Haring blazed a trail through the 80's and died at 31 after only about a decade-long career as an artist. The prolific body of work he left behind had an intuitive sense of frenzy, attempting to change the future into dream, while at the same time full of the energy of life. Alongside pop images of dreams and hope that sets one free, there is also something of the artist's madness and chaos in Haring's work. These ambiguities challenge the legendary reputation enjoyed by Haring, especially with respect to the New York street culture, speaking equally to those of that period, as well as to the generation to whom the 80's remain largely unknown.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Haring's birth. The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum, which opened last year, is hosting the special exhibition "It is art as I know it. It is life as I know it. -Dream, Love, Hope and Peace" in memory of him. As a part of this commemorative program, Ars Gallery is holding a Keith Haring exhibition centering on his prints. The 7 prints on display exude a sense of immediacy and vigor that also reflects the artist's deft technique.

Kopf works with visual concepts that have been refined and manipulated in order to take into account the potential responses the work will arouse in the viewer. Her work is also possessed of a generous vision and full of emotional affect, reflecting her belief in the power of communication to connect people. In order to help kick her own smoking habit, she started the "Air Cigarette" series of works in 2002 as an art project. This is the Tokyo version of that project, showcasing a total of 6 related works.

<p>From April 16th (Tue) to May 19th (Mon), a brand new series of unique umbrellas and parasols by Canadian designer/sculptor John Di Cesare will be on sale at SFT. 15 years ago, Cesare came up with a radical new concept for umbrellas and parasols. This concept eventually brought him to Japan, where he pursued his fascination with these objects and their role in Japanese culture. His playful designs, full of originality, are made in the same spirit as traditional Japanese umbrellas and parasols.
In this exhibition at SFT, 4 of Cesare's design series will be on display. The Parashell Parasol draws inspiration from the shapes and textures of seashells. The Kabocha Parasol is inspired by the chubby form of a pumpkin. The Rhythm Umbrella for women and Grande Umbrella for men share beautiful two-hue combinations as well as an irregular rib shape. </p>

<p>While the city seems to have been flourishing after climbing out of a recession, it's also said that gaps between social classes have widened these days. As walking around the city, we encounter soon-to-be-forgotten old towns and buildings, where a variety of people live their lives. Placing ourselves in such corners of the city, we feel beauty, nostalgia, agony, sadness, anxiety and frustration. The artist hopes for the city to one day become full of hope and peace. 41 monochrome photographs will be on display.</p>

<p>"Ach so" is one of the few expressions in both Japanese and German that are used in both languages to express surprise.
Germans say "ach so!" when they unexpectedly learn something new, while Japanese say "ah so" when surprised at something they had not previously known. Same expression, similar situation, two different cultures.
Contemporary art aims at the realization of something new, folded into a new experience or sensation, expressed through a novel medium. This is why the artists chose this title for this exhibition. They hope many visitors to the exhibition will find some sense of wonder and surprise, filling the venue space with a chorus of "ach so" and "ah, so!"

<br />(2008-04-30 - 2008-05-23)</p>
<p>Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce Naoya Hatakeyama's 4th solo exhibition. This exhibition presents approximately 15 photographs from Hatakeyama's recent "Ciel Tombé" series, photographed in Paris, 2007.

In Europe, there are cities that quarried stones directly below an urban area to construct the city itself. Among such cities, Paris was exceptional for undergoing digging on a massive scale. Due to continuous digging from the Middle Ages to modern times, Paris's underground is full of holes to such an extent as to be comparable to Gruyere cheese. In fact, catacombs (underground cemeteries), photographed by Nadar in the 19th century and now famous as tourist spots, were created by using portions of the old quarries.
Hatakeyama, who once wrote in his book "Lime Works" that "Mines and cities are like the negative and positive of a single photograph", noticed that similar structures unfolded vertically in modern Paris and visited the remains of several underground quarries (mostly made of limestone) with the cooperation of Inspection Générale des Carriéres.

"Ciel Tombé" is a term referring to a situation in which the ceilings of the subterranean quarry remains have tumbled down. (A direct translation is "fallen sky".) As abandoning these sites would eventually have harmful effects on construction above ground, thorough consolidation work was conducted by the Inspectorate during the 20th century. Yet some Ciel Tombés were left abandoned in a former quarry called "la Brasserie" that lies 17 meters below the Bois (Forest) de Vincennes that lies at the eastern end of Paris, because only forest - no buildings - existed above ground. No one knows exactly when the "sky fell down".

Opening reception: April 30, Wed, 18:00-20:00

<p>"Science for Children" was first published in 1925 (Taisho 14), and continues to be one of Japan's best and longest running magazines. It has contributed to nurturing future scientists, serving as an early entry route into natural science.
Ranging from space engineering to animal and plant ecologies to familiar inventions from everyday life, the magazine pushed an editorial vision that helped its readers explore topical scientific issues in greater detail, publishing serial and special editions that gave readers simulated experiences in science and technology. In addition, the magazine did not only deal with the latest novel topics. It featured all manner of content, from the avant-garde to the everyday, without dumbing down or omitting details even with difficult content, in an attempt to foster independent thinking. The minutely detailed articles and supplements included with the publication were extremely popular, and many readers continued to be avid fans even way into adulthood.
There were also detailed diagrams of everything from paper planes to home appliances, allowing its readers to make the real thing, or a miniature, for themselves. It gave children the chance to make things they really wanted to have and play with, all while having fun and being challenged through DIY experiences. Telling its readers the importance of this hands-on approach was another reason for its continued popularity.
This exhibition of crafts brings to light the charm of a magazine that fostered its readers' curiosity for the unknown, and the joy of figuring things out on one's own.

Talk and workshop events are also planned. Check website for details (Japanese only):

<br />(2008-04-17 - 2008-05-24)</p>
<p>Gallery Strenger is delighted to present a special sculpture exhibition featuring the acclaimed Belgian artist, Myriam Eykens. This will be her first solo exhibition in Japan and will feature a recent series of representative work - female figures made of terracotta delicately colored with natural pigments and bronze, with a fair skin texture.
Eykens' figures have peaceful and somehow extraordinary expressions, depicted in their graceful postures and their mellow, curvaceous bodies. The airy texture of the terracotta and the smooth surface of the bronze give them a timeless and serene appearance. The Belgian art critic Stephane Rey wrote that Eykens was an artist who had a rare and exquisite expression suffused with a calm and soft aura, as well as a dignified graciousness, marking her work as blissfully free from current fashions in art.
Gallery Strenger opened last September with a four-artist exhibition which included Eykens, and is delighted to present her first solo show this time around.

Vernissage: April 17th (Thu) 19:00-21:00</p>
