at Ota Fine Arts (Kiyosumi, Odaiba area)
(2008-04-25 - 2008-05-31)

Ota Fine Arts' second exhibition since its relocation will be a new work by Dutch video artist Saskia Olde Wolbers entitled "Deadline". Her past two works will be on display at the same time at the Mori Art Museum.
Wolbers was born in 1971 in Holland and is now based in London. She received the Baloise Prize at the Basel Art Fair in 2003, and the Beck's Future Prize the following year, continued validation of her work at the very forefront of the field of video art.
"Deadline" continues the Wolbers trops of filming symbolic and metaphoric objects in a dense manner, layering the images with a narrative originating in distant Africa. The story traces the family trajectory of a father and uncle of a pair of twins over a period of more than a century, blurring the outlines between past and present in this temporal illusion. Wolbers' video is an invitation to a magical, unstable reality triggered by a simple narrative action while on a roadtrip.
The video images were created painstakingly using lifelike models that were then combined with writing and filmed in a studio. All the models used were handcrafted, but the narration itself has the feel of an enchanted spell, creating a fantastical space-time where truth and lie form curious narrative mixture.
"Deadline" premiered last fall in London, after which it was shown in Toronto. This is the first stop on its Asian tour.

Opening party: April 25th (Fri) 18:00-

Held concurrently:
MAM project 007: Saskia Olde Wolbers
Mori Art Museum (Gallery 2, 53rd floor)
(2008-05-09 - 2008-06-08)

Exhibiting approximately 900 portrait photographs Eiichiro Sakata took in the past 20 years in 4 locations -Marunouchi Building, Shin Marunouchi Building, Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery and Marunouchi Oazo. In addition to photographs, there will be video screening and a huge scale installation at each site.

All portrait photographs were freshly trimmed for this exhibition. This is an unprecedented approach in which the visitors get to see the portraits of representative figures of our time as they journey into various exhibition spaces in Marunouchi. From the 20th century to the 21st century...the past 20 years witnessed a major shift of various conceptual frameworks both in Japan and abroad, such as the demise of the Cold War, the Gulf War, globalization and the IT revolution. "Portraits of our time" the artist has captured will reflect the time the world has taken.

The Turner Prize is one of the most important prizes in the art world today. Organized by the Tate galleries and presented annually since 1984, it represents a major steppingstone for young British artists. The Prize is unique because it is not restricted to conventional media – such as painting, sculpture or photography – but may include new and diverse forms of expression. The awards ceremony is telecast live and is a highly anticipated national event in Britain. This exhibition – the first time that works by all past Prize-winners have been exhibited together– provides an opportunity to examine changes in the Prize over the years. It is at the same time a retrospective of British contemporary art, with work by the likes of Gilbert and George, Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Born in 1971, Saskia Olde Wolbers creates videos with a mysterious transparency. After creating elaborate handmade models, Wolbers films them, building up stories within. The constructed worlds on the screen may be beautiful, but show no people and are desolate. Combined with a soft, somewhat magical voice-over, her images penetrate deep into the minds and memories of viewers. Each of her works raises doubts about the truth of a world that we had believed to be real, giving a glimpse of the extent to which what we perceive as reality is in fact a constructed artifact. In 2003 Olde Wolbers won the Baloise Art Prize at Basel Art Fair, followed by the Becks’ Futures Award in 2004. She was also selected for ARTFORUM magazine’s “Best of 2005: 11 critics and curators look at the year in art,” demonstrating her growing reputation and potential. The timing is perfect for Mori Art Museum to bring her art to Japan.

The world of colors is entering a new era. Thanks to the development of computers, LED and display technologies, we can now freely choose colors from an infinite selection with a single switch.
Colors are generated from relationships between light, objects and the sense of sight. Techniques of color arrangement have developed mainly from the colors (pigments and dyes) of non-moving objects. But now that we can freely control light, we are encountering a new problem: how to show moving colors.
Changes in our sense of color have a powerful influence in the fields of household goods, fashion and interior design. More people are not simply passively choosing colors but are doing so as a way of expressing themselves and conveying messages.
Gathered under a single roof at this exhibit are works that lead a new generation of colors, such as interactive art, visual works and interior goods and lighting from advanced companies.
