How will swine flu affect art?

Well, some museums in Hyogo and Kansai have been closed this week in response to the health risks. In the case of the virus spreading fully into Kanto (as in, more than just a few people), it is likely that major museums will temporarily close. If swine flu does get more serious in Kanto and you are thinking of going to a museum, then we recommend you check their website.

New Kids on the Block

Furthering Kiyosumi-Shirakawa’s reputation as a formidable art area, Maquiarto is opening its office there as a viewing room for contemporary art. M7, as the name suggests, is on the seventh floor of an apartment building, apparently a mere “seven seconds” from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. The first viewing will be of Tamae Akimoto’s work until June 30. See the venue’s website for location details and more on the opening show.

Another Award Competition

The Tokyo Mid Town Award 2009 is open to all and carries a top prize of a million yen. Its theme, like last year’s competition, is “Japan Value”. The judges include Takenobu Iagarashi and Kazuhiko Hachiya. Go to the official website (Japanese only) for more details and entry requirements.

Weekend Events

Don’t forget that this weekend is your chance to see a bit of nature in the middle of the city. David Pollard and Tomonari Waku will be building one of their “Natural House” art works at the Yebizu Garden Plaza on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. TABlog interviewed the pair earlier this week.

It’s going to be a busy two days. Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya is having a series of performances from the winners of its Experimental Sound, Art and Performance Festival. See TAB’s event page for details.

Further, TWS is also calling for applicants for the awards in February next year, as well as for participants for their artist-in-residence programme. See their website for details and an application form for the latter.

A major new exhibition opens on May 23 at the Hara Museum, showcasing “Micropop” art. Hara is also hosting a talk event on May 27 from 18:30 to 20:30. Speakers include Eva Berendes, a resident with the Daimler Foundation’s ART SCOPE 2009/2010 (although Jan Scharrelmann has cancelled his appearance). Reservation and entry fee is required. Visit the Hara Museum website for more.
