NY Times continues its love affair with all architecture Japanese. This week it ran an article on Toyo Ito. Ito is also one of the architects featured in the “GA International 2009″ exhibition, reviewed recently by TABlog.
Yasuhisa.com (Yasuhisa Hasegawa’s website) had a nice round-up in Japanese of fun iPhone and iPod Touch applications, including some that are free.
Swiss bag brand Freitag will be releasing throughout August a series of bags made from used exhibition banners from leading art galleries and museums, including Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum and London’s Tate Modern. The idea behind the product is ‘art recycling’, re-using the posters and imagery from the exhibition to create a new thing. For more, see the Freitag shop.

Kind of. No, you’ll have a job seeing Chinese artist Xing Xin in the flesh. This is because he has sealed himself inside an iron box on Venice’s Murano Island. The voluntary incarceration is a protest at China’s one-child policy. Intrigued or inspired visitors will be able to see the artist to a certain extent, since the box is fitted out with cameras and footage of the artist will be broadcast outside to viewers. How long Xin stays in the box depends on his scholastic abilities. He has set himself the task of counting the characters in the 150-part set of Chinese schoolbooks, and will not be freed/free himself until he has surmounted this challenge.
Events
Don’t forget that today (Saturday July 18) there will be an event in Bakurocho organized by Central East Tokyo, as we reported last week. The galleries, design offices and architecture firms in the area are all collaborating to present lectures and talks, and even walking tours. Galleries will also be open till later than usual. See the Tokyo Art Point Project website for the programme. (TABlog has previously featured a photo report on the growing art area Bakurocho and a review of 2007’s CET event.)
Also on Saturday (July 18) there will be another launch party for Patrick W. Galbraith’s new book, The Otaku Encyclopedia. It will be happening at Vitamin Water, an event space on the eighth and nineth floors of the H&M building in Harajuku, from 15:00 to 18:00. No only will the author be present, but apparently there will be free drinks. What better way to relax after your Bakurocho jaunt and to escape the holiday weekend shoppers.
And finally
At last. The moment you’ve all been waiting for. Those poor souls who have failed to pick up the latest copy of TAB’s Art Map for July and August can now download it!
