Art online

Do you want to show off your designs? E-commerce company streetcanvas has launched its new website. The bilingual site holds ongoing t-shirt design contests, where anyone can submit a design and compete in the online competitions. Winners, selected by the online community of Japanese art lovers, will win prizes, and the t-shirt design will then be sold exclusively on the website.

Spotted on the web

Good Design Awards 2009 has a very nice new website, as you would expect.

Japan in the news

Ever with its eye turned towards Japan, the NY Times reports this week in detail on cellphone manga.

Congratulations

Japanese photographer Shoko Maeda has been awarded the Renaissance Art Prize by the Italian Cultural Institute London. UK-based Maeda will spend a one-week residency in Italy in 2010 as part of her prize. You can see a good selection of Maeda’s work on her website.

Openings

This week saw two exhibitions with competing opening receptions, even though they couldn’t have been more different. Kishin Shinoyama’s “Kishin: Bijin”, the latest photographs of ‘beautiful people’ by the ‘master’, was a plush event in the basement of Omotesando Hills, attended by the photographer’s subjects for this year, including actress Meisa Kuroki. Contrasted to this is the sincere and quieter work of American artist Tyler Starr in the exhibition “Wallowing Series”, showing in the very majestic setting of former kura Gallery ef in Asakusa.
