Launched this week

Yesterday (Friday July 31) saw the press conference for the autumn Festival/Tokyo 09, the biggest performing arts festival in Japan. The line-up includes dancer Ikuyo Kuroda (BATIK), Rimini Protokoll, Sankai Juku and Ishinha. The English version is not complete at time of writing but the new Japanese website is up and running, and contains profiles of all the performers and productions.

With all this glum news about magazines folding (pardon the pun) it is uplifting to hear of new print media. atPlus is a rather serious and pricey quarterly journal created with the slogan of “ideas and activity”. Its first edition will feature articles about the limits of capitalism and economics.

Architecture tours

Ever wanted an expert opinion on all these modern buildings you see around you? Architect and one-time Tokyo resident Robert Day will be giving tours of Tokyo that take in the historic Nihonbashi environs, as well as modern blockbuster buildings like the Prada store and Omotesando Hills. Dates are still sketchy but it looks to be happening in the last week of October. For more information, contact Robert Day at Robert Day Architects.

Goodbye to all that

Donald Eubank has vacated his position as Arts Editor of The Japan Times. Donald is a familar face at gallery openings and was also involved in 101Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair. The new Arts Editor is the formidable Mio Yamada.

Openings

Tonight (Saturday August 1) the Kiyosumi Shirakawa building will come alive with most of the galleries opening new exhibitions there.

Couldn’t recommend the Tokyo tour more highly. You are kept on the move throughout Tokyo to see some of the best buildings in the world. The tour was well organised with enough flexibility to alter the agenda if circumstances dictated. The group is usually small which encourages a friendly fun atmosphere. Rob Day does an excellent job of organisation and has an intimate knowledge of the culture and architecture. You wouldn’t be disappointed.

Thanks for the response, Shane. Yes, the tour seems interesting and, judging from the information currently available, this year’s will likely be more ambitious than before.

We should hopefully be covering the tour in more detail so watch this space.

we did the robert day tokyo architecture tour last october [2008] & it was a fantastic tour through tokyo & its surrounds. my wife also accompanied me, & although not an architect found the tour inspirational & very interesting. japan is a completely different culture, so it was great to have robert to guide us through the metropolis of tokyo. we also met up with some local architects, which added to the japanese cultural experience. we highly recommend the robert day tokyo architecture tour.

Robert’s tour was a great way to see Japanese architecture and experience a part of Tokyo life and culture. With like minded travelers we could unashamedly scour every part of a building or gallery and not stress about getting to the next place as Robert had this part handled. The dinners and meeting local architects was also a highlight.

I enjoyed the Tokyo tour so much last April, that I went on another unofficial tour with Robert in June.I think it will become a yearly event, as the more I see of Tokyo and Japan, the more interesting I find it. We could not have seen as much and learnt as much without Robert’s assistance. Thank goodness he is tall!We would have definitiely got lost.
Robert’s knowledge of the language and the culture enabled us to pack into a limited time many buildings and art galleries. The biggest thrill was seeing the Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings. It was inspiring and fun. Highly recomeded architects and non architects alike!
