Tokyo Design Week 2009

The design event of the Tokyo year has got underway again, with the main exhibitions happening at Midtown and Jingu-Gaien Kaigakanmae. But there are also major satellite events, such as at Spiral (“Emerging Directors Art Fair Ultra 002″).

TAB news

Don’t forget next Saturday (November 7) is the TAB 5th Year Anniversary Party at Super Deluxe.

Gossip (maybe not true!)

There are rumours floating around that Magical, Artroom in Ebisu is to close. However, a member of staff confirmed at least that Magic Room??, the neat cafe and bar upstairs, is definitely continuing. Let’s hope the rumours are false, since the NADiff building would be a sadder place without it.

Also, people were amused this week to find apparent Yoshitomo Nara products on sale on Yahoo Auctions. An email doing the rounds from his representatives at Tomio Koyama Gallery reassured people of the truth, that they were fakes being passed off as real. The dastardly villains! Sadly, the auctions have now closed…

Around and about

Tokyo station is set to be transformed by this extraordinary installation from cheungvogl architects. However, exact dates and location are unclear. Certainly, when I went I couldn’t find it! Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Awards

Tokyo Midtown is not just hosting Tokyo Design Week but also its own “Midtown Award”s exhibition. Check out the official homepage for the winners in the art and design categories.

The Bunkacho has announced its Order of Culture awards for Heisei 21 and included among the recipients is Yayoi Kusama. The Emperor will present the fifteen honorees with their awards on Culture Day (November 3).

Competition

Risa Partners is calling for submissions to become part of an installation at a hotel in Kaga, Ishikawa prefecture. The competition is looking for the next generation of designers, architects and artists, people who can inherit and continue traditional regional culture. The installation will be on the theme of healing and light. For more details and how to enter, see the official website (Japanese).
