Galleries Moving On Out
Some years after the demise of the Roppongi gallery building in 2008 that saw several major venues disperse throughout Tokyo, now comes news of a renaissance of galleries going back to the centre of the city.
Wako Works of Art (currently near Hatsudai), Ota Fine Arts (currently on its own in Kachidoki, and originally based in Roppongi) and Zen Foto (opened in Shibuya around a year ago) are moving in together. They will all occupy spaces in the Piramide Building in Roppongi, joined by Taka Ishii, which is creating a new second gallery focusing on film and photography.
The inaugural and joint opening reception is on February 18, just as the “G-tokyo” art fair opens at Mori.
Homecoming
Back in 2009 TABlog interviewed photographer Paule Saviano about his Gallery ef show that highlighted those who suffered in the bombing of Tokyo during the War. His new show (again at ef) features survivors from the Dresden fire bombing and will be exhibited simultaneously in Tokyo and Dresden. Saviano’s humbling work will also be featured in an upcoming book this summer, covering his projects to document the Hibakusha, and Tokyo and Dresden fire bombing victims. Paule has plans to expand his focus to Spain (Gernica) and Britain (Coventry) as well.
