Nantenshi Gallery was opened by brothers Kazuo and Haruo Aoki in 1960. Despite relocating several times, it has remained in the Chuo-ku Kyo-bashi area. The name of the gallery was given by Kazuo Aoki's father-in-law Tamotsu Nishiyama, co-founder of the renowned antiques shop Kochukyo, and incorporates several meanings; southern sky, the plant nandina, and southern India.
