The 1920s saw a new type of popular culture flourish in Japan under the Taisho democracy movement, accompanied by economic growth and international exchange. The world of art was influenced by just such a social climate; the artists of the time started exploring freer forms of expression. While young Japanese-style painters broadened their artistic horizons and cultivated their unique styles by researching Chinese and Western paintings, masters like Taikan Yokoyama and Seiho Takeuchi also fashioned entirely new painting methods unique to themselves. Shunkyo Yamamoto, for instance, applied photo-taking techniques to his work. This exhibiton presents approximately 50 paintings (in both Japanese and Western styles) by such artists who were active during the Taisho and Showa periods.
