"1000th Anniversary of Genji Monogatari: Pictures of Genji Monogatari in Ukiyo-e" Exhibition

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
The Tale of Genji has remained an immortal masterpiece, interpreted in various forms throughout the years. This year, the Tale of Genji reached its 1000th anniversary, and many exhibitions and commemorative events are being held throughout Japan. Of course, people in the Edo Period were no less acquainted with the tale. Through prints directed towards the common people, the world of the Tale of Genji was represented in ukiyo-e. Though at first glance they may seem disconnected, we will show how these prints are related to the Tale of Genji. In this exhibition, by examining the genre of pictures of Genji in ukiyo-e, we will show how the common people in the Edo Period were introduced to the world of the Tale of Genji.
