MOT x Bloomberg Public Space Project: Maki Onishi + Yuki Hyakuda

Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Maki Onishi, Yuki Hyakuda
Amid the recent trend toward prominently cross-disciplinary practices between architecture and art, the young architectural unit made up of Maki Onishi and Yuki Hyakuda have garnered much attention for their daring spatial propositions that elicit real bodily sensations and reactions from viewers. Unconstrained by existing functionalities, Onishi and Hyakuda have been creating architectural installations that spark the creativity and sense of playfulness of people using their spaces.

For this project, Onishi and Hyakuda have created a cave-shaped folly in the rigid space of the MOT's stone and concrete media court. The encounter between two different textures and materials - the floor with its organic protuberances, and the smooth, supple roof - creates both a spatial tension as well as a feeling of being embraced and wrapped up by a soft, pliant substance. Stepping into this internal grotto-like space, the viewer's sense of sight and touch are stimulated, drawing forth various bodily movements from the spectator.

Because the installation is in an outdoor space that is open and free to the public at all times, visitors can experience the work repeatedly on multiple visits.
