“Ko-Kutani Ware” Exhibition

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
After many years of debate over its place of production, today the most widely accepted theory is that Ko-Kutani ware is actually early iro-e (polychrome overglaze) Imari ware produced in the mid 17th century. Ko-Kutani ware is characterized by a variety that makes it almost impossible to bring together as a single type, with lightly colored Shonzui-de ware, picturesque Gosai-de ware, innovative and richly decorated Ao-de ware, and even blue-and-white Ai-Kutani ware and elegant Suisaka-de vessels, which often featured brown backgrounds or areas made by using iron-oxide glaze, once classified as Ko-Kutani ware. This exhibition brings together examples of Imari ware that were previously bundled together under the label "Ko-Kutani," offering visitors the chance to appreciate their technical achievements and beauty as well as presenting an overview of the latest historical research.
