Chinzan Tsubaki
Chinzan Tsubaki (1801-1854) was one of the leading literati painters of the late Edo period (1603-1864). Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Tsubaki studied under painter Kinryo Kaneko and later under Kazan Watanabe while working as a low-ranking bureaucrat for the shogunate.

At the time, the growing interest in foreign countries and the popularity of ukiyo-e prints in Edo led to the creation of a wide range of genres of artwork. Against this backdrop, Tsubaki concentrated his efforts on flower-and-bird paintings, which gained popularity. His work, with its fresh colors and light brushwork, was well-received. He also excelled at portrait painting, and while inheriting the shading and other techniques of expression from Watanabe, he developed them in his own unique technique.

This exhibition is the first in the Kanto region to feature the work of Chinzan Tsubaki. Work designated as Important Cultural Properties will also be introduced to give a fuller picture of the artist.

First Period: March 18 (Sat) - April 2 (Sun)
Second Period: April 4 (Tue) - April 16 (Sun)
*There will be significant changes in the exhibition during the first and second periods.
