Japan's only national film institution and the country's largest film archive, the National Film Archive of Japan was established in 2018 following the establishment of the National Film Archive of the National Museum of Modern Art in 1952 and the opening of the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 1970. 

In the Nagase Memorial Hall Ozu and the Small Hall, special screenings are held according to themes such as director, actor, country of production, genre, and era. The exhibition room displays film-related materials, from movie posters and photographs to film equipment and artifacts of filmmakers. The permanent exhibition introduces the history of Japanese films through the valuable materials in the collection, while the special exhibition introduces film culture from a variety of perspectives and holds related talk events. In the library, visitors can browse film books, catalogs of domestic and international film festivals, and major film magazines.
