Wajima is a city located in Ishikawa prefecture, the north part of the Noto peninsula, facing the Sea of Japan. On 25 March 2007, a severe earthquake caused serious damage to Wajima and its industries. Kakitsubata, a store and gallery in Tokyo working with numerous designers have produced the project Wajima x Kakitsubata to help reconstruct and support the traditional industries in the area, Wajima-nuri (Japanese lacquer) and Sake brewing. Kakitsubata has coordinated the collaboration of 4 contemporary designers and 4 Wajima craftsmen to produce beautiful, elegant sake cups and tableware for everyday use.
