Krzysztof Wodiczko
Since the era of the Cold War, and in particular after 9/11, the trend of the art scene as a whole, in spite of increasing political tensions in various regions of the world, has been defined by a market fundamentalism that seems far removed from the reality of the world. In such a situation, the meaning of Krzysztof Wodiczko's art over the last forty years has become more important. Based first in his native Poland, then in Canada, and now in the United States, he has developed projects centered on the political meaning of the public sphere, and reflecting the consciousness of people who are alienated by the contemporary world.

The Hiroshima Projection was mounted after Wodiczko won the Hiroshima Art Prize in 1999. By projecting moving images of people living in Hiroshima, such as atomic-bomb survivors untoHiroshima Peace Memorial, the artist achieved the singular feat of telling people's personal memories through the gigantic body of public architecture. At this time, by placing this Hiroshima Projection at the core of the argument, we attempt a fundamental rethinking of art's possibility in the public sphere. In the meantime, this lecture will be an opportunity to deeply reconsider the "other" possibilities of art. (Text by Kosuke Ikeda)
