This event has ended.

In commemoration of TICAD 2008, the French Embassy in Japan and the Franco-Japanese Institute of Yokohama, with the collaboration of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, present an exhibition of 5 young African photographers at the Yokohama Museum of Art.
Shown for the first time in Japan, these photographers come from the 7th African Encounters of Photography from Bamako. This event, hosted by the Malian capital, has become a crucial venue for photography and a prime opportunity to discover emerging - or established - talents from the African continent. The photographers - Sammy Baloji (RDC), Mohamed Camara (Mali), Saidou Dicko (Burkina Faso), Calvin Dondo (Zimbabwe) and Soavina Ramaroson (Madagascar) - are between 25 and 45, and among the most talented of the new generation of African photographers.
Through a selection of 40 photographs, this exhibitions takes up the theme of the 7th Encounters, which took place in Mali in November 2007, "In the City and Beyond". The public is invited to discover the manner in which these photographers perceive and render their environment. A journey at once physical and mental, wandering through geographies, everyday practices that question what are perhaps our own hackneyed ideas and impressions of Africa.
