Yosuke Takayama Exhibition
This event has ended.
Yosuke Takayama was born in 1980. He has worked consistently in wood, although his works are far from what one would typically consider to be wooden sculpture. Takayama's woodwork shuns figurative, concrete forms, but also distances itself from abstraction. Looking at once like a creature and an object, these works also possess a unique feel and texture that seems at first glance to be closer to either clay or plastic.
These airtight, organic forms are shaved and planed, polished, painted in a single color, after which Takayama draws various patterns onto the wooden pieces using a fine pen. Sometimes the wood contains flaws that become more pronounced as the sculpture takes final shape. The pieces seem to be aspiring towards something else, functioning as a sort of protective talisman or sacrificial token.
This is Takayama's first solo exhibition, showcasing three large sculptures and other smaller works that fit in your hand, as well as a series of colorful drawings.
