Kei Houraku
Presenting works made with painter and photographer Kei Houraku’s new painting method. Deconstructing the conventional use of digital print materials, Houraku replaces digital data by painting directly onto printing paper with printer ink. Images resulting from colors melted into each other through complex chemical reactions break down the resolutions, color latitudes, and grid structures inherent to digital image processing, creating a new tactile image that neither of analog nor digital imaging has ever produced.

As one of the most heavily produced and consumed art supplies of today, digital print materials have shaped our visual world. While Houraku does not explicitly address the social implications of this reality, his work reveals the hidden norms we take for granted and suggests how simple and beautiful it can be to venture away from mass-produced imaging technology.
