Artists

Georges Rouault
The French painter Georges Rouault (1871-1958) first began his career as a craftsman of stained glass but came to study painting under the symbolist artist Gustave Moreau, and gained much influence from fellow students Matisse and Albert Marquet and their fauvist experiments. Yet Rouault clung to his own particular subject of painting, continuously depicting the suffering of Christ and other scenes from the bible, along with images of clowns and other circus characters, creating highly original work. This work was introduced to Japan fro an early stage and soon caught the hearts of the public, so much so that it is oft said that there is no other country in the world that respects Rouault as much as Japan.
This exhibition gathers a significant collection of his work focusing on oil paintings, water colors and prints, arranged according to the characters which appear within them. Rouault offered a cutting commentary upon the society of his time and in this exhibition we may find that his message still has relevance to us today.
