Alfons Mucha (1860¬–1939), born in Moravia (present Czech Republic), remains to this day a highly popular artist. Starting out as an illustrator, his poster for the 1894 play Gismonda starring Sarah Bernhardt made him famous overnight in the glittering Art Nouveau world of turn-of-the-century Paris. He went on to illustrate more posters for Sarah Bernhardt plays as well as commercial advertisements and magazine illustrations. His talent came fully into bloom with his interior decorations for national and corporate pavilions at the 1900 Expositions Universelles de Paris. Bolstered by his success in Paris, Mucha began to think about how he might contribute to his country through art and in 1910 returned to his place of birth. His artwork from this period onward, which brimmed with a love for his country and its people, included designs for stamps and currencies of the newly formed Czechoslovakia, as well as public works projects. Mucha remained active as an artist until the very end of his life. This exhibition presents 160 Mucha pieces, mainly from the Trimal Collection owned by the Czech physician and third-generation collector Zdenek Trimal. On display are oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, color lithograph posters, ornamental panels, and illustrations. Come enjoy the works of this Moravian-born artist who flourished in Paris.
