Celebrating the 130th Anniversary of Kobayashi Kokei’s Birth “Kokei and Togyū— Two Masters of Japanese Modern Art”

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Kokei Kobayashi, Togyu Okumura
Featuring works by Togyū Okumura and Kokei Kobayashi from the museum’s collection, including “Still Life,” Kobayashi’s only remaining oil painting, which dates from the period in which he was most intensely conscious of Western-style painting. Also on display are all eight paintings from the famous series “Scenes from the Legend of Kiyohime,” shown together for the first time in three years. This series is regarded as a masterpiece from the time of Kobayashi’s return to the classics. Viewers can also see “Fruit and Sanbokan Oranges,” in which Kobayashi integrated the Western still-life style into Nihonga painting. Rarely displayed works from other collections also exhibited, including “Prince Ōhiko-no-mikoto” (from Nihonshoki), the fruit of Kobayashi’s studies of the classics and of the Rimpa school, as well as “Asters and Red Hibiscuses” and “Puppy.”

While Kobayashi and Okumura worked in what are, at first glance, quite different styles, this exhibition focuses what they had in common, reassessing and comparing their work in the context of their writings and episodes in their lives.
