Film Screening: Pompeii From the British Museum

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished
The British Museum’s “Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum” exhibition became the talk of Europe, presenting more than 450 valuable items never before taken outside of Italy along with the most recent research on Pompeii, including new scholarship. The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography is now privately showing a film about the hit exhibition.

The movie was shot on high definition film on June 18th, 2013, during which the British Museum was closed for the entire day. Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum, and other prominent experts gave a private on-camera tour so that audiences could enjoy the exhibition in theaters around the world. The film was screened live at 280 theatres in England and Ireland, with 45,000 tickets sold. A partially re-edited version of the film now comes to Japan.

The large metropolis of Pompeii and the small seaside town of Herculaneum were instantaneously buried in ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted roughly 2,000 years ago. The valuable relics from these two towns are keys to understanding the lives of Romans. The film also intersperses the museum tour with music, poetry, and other footage created especially for the live screening, attesting to the Roman’s meaningful lives behind what can be called the greatest tragedy in human history.

Screening times: From 10:20 each day, with additional showings from 19:20 on 11/2 (Sat), 11/3 (Sun), 11/9 (Sat), 11/15 (Fri), 11/16 (Sat), and 11/22 (Fri).
