Artists

Joe Foti
Looking for a theme for this exhibition, the artist remembered the sayings “go back to your roots” and “you are where you come from.” So, in preparation, Foti returned to Bristol, Tennesee, the small town on the border of Tennessee and Virginia where he grew up. While doing research, he came in contact with the town historian, V.N. Bud Phillips. After reading Phillips’ books and meeting him, Foti discovered that Bristol is a perfect inspiration for his art, full of fascinating history and interesting people. The art in this collection is therefore a mix of memories Foti had while living there in the 60’s and 70’s, Civil War history centered on Bristol’s train station, and the many incredible stories of Phillips. Beaver Creek is a creek running through town that Foti played in as a child.

Some of the displayed works feature what look like split-rail or Civil War fences. On a recent visit, Foti found many of the wonderful fences he remembered as having been replaced by plastic. As the essence of small town America fades piece by piece, Foti hopes to commemorate the small town America he remembers. This exhibition will be one of three as Foti intends to return to the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and discover more of its wonderful past.
