In memory of the curator Takashi Azumaya, who passed away last year, this joint exhibition with Arataniurano is curated by Noi Sawaragi, who maintained a long professional relationship and friendship with Azumaya. It presents the works of five artists selected for exhibitions by Sawaragi.

Azumaya curated the 1999 exhibition “Art/Domestic: Temperature of the Time at the Setagaya Art Museum, which marked a historical moment in Japanese art. He was later involved in the foundation of a number of events and institutions that have become central to the art scene in metropolitan Japan, including the Yokohama Triennale, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, and the Mori Art Museum, eventually starting his own practice. His achievements as an independent curator include “Gundam— Generating Future,” which opened at the Suntory Museum and traveled to a number of museums throughout Japan from 2005 to 2007. Azumaya was first recognized internationally as one of the curators of the Busan Biennale 2008. He was appointed as director of the biennale in 2010 to high domestic and international expectations. A multi-talented figure who was not only a curator but also a musician, artist, and performer, Azumaya envisioned a future for those living in the present. Through the works of artists taking the temperature of the age through creative expression, this exhibition offers the opportunity to reflect on Azumaya’s vision.
