Oliver Sperl “Raw Material”
This event has ended.
Oliver Sperl favors carpet knives and cutters, but also uses dry point as a technique in creating his dynamic, rough-looking works described as “earthy”. Hailing from “Bavarian Siberia”, a mountainous region of Germany near the Czech border, Sperl expresses the fantastical and wild aspects of these natural surroundings in his works. Fir trees are a frequent motif of his black and white images, which are both splendid and dark. Forms drawn from carved lithograph crayons seem simple, but when combined with computer-composed scenery take on a dadaist surrealism. Sperl carves out all of his painted forms, compiling various-sized elements on a computer. May of his completed works, like those for the night club Berghain, lack a concretes. He wraps his numerous carved images in parchment and store them in a black box, joining them together on the computer when he creates his collages. This is the first time for his “Raw-Material” images to be displayed.
