Hiroshi Naito
In “Composition of the Protoform,” Naito’s first exhibition held in 1995, the architect presented his work along with the concept of “protoform.” He described protoform as “something like the protoplasm of an architecture that exists within the depths of everyone’s mind.” After 18 years, we find that Naito’s concept of protoform has grown in its vividness by creating new terms and taking on further meanings.
According to Naito, who has continued to investigate the “value of space,” “architecture is the place where the lives of the people who live within it dwell, and the architecture itself comes to life as the memories of the space and time experienced by its people cohere to it.” He believes that what must be realized today in the post-3.11 age is a shift away from the “protoform,” that is, the dream of an individual life, to the “protoscape,” meaning a dream landscape for a common body of people.
Featuring a recreation of the Naito Architect & Associates workspace where Naito’s numerous projects have begun, this exhibition offers a look into Naito’s thought processes for both his early representative works and his current projects, as well as his drafted proposals.
