Artists

Genpei Akasegawa
Genpei Akasegawa (1937-) is an artistic figure of numerous different faces, from pioneering avant-garde artist to manga artist, illustrator, novelist, essayist and photographer. Starting out as an avant-garde artist, he formed “Neo Dadaism Organizers” with Ushio Shinohara and Masanobu Yoshimura in 1960 and in 1963 joined with Natsuyuki Nakanishi and Jiro Komatsu to create “Hi-Red Center”, becoming an icon of the “anti-art” movement, while at the same time gaining wide attention with the court case called over his fake thousand yen note work. Beyond this he has produced many successful works as a manga artist and illustrator and continues to work beyond the bounds of any one particular artistic field. He is an artist dedicated to destroying principles of “commonsense” and with his unique approach has formed a pillar of Japanese contemporary art history, still inspiring many young artists today. This exhibition reflects upon Akasegawa’s career over the last 50 years with a wide selection of over 500 works and documents which pay testament to his place in art history.
