This event has ended.

It is said by some that nihonga ended with the postwar discussion on the extinction of nihonga and the rise of the avant-garde movement, so that today it is merely the shadow of nihonga that remains. But is this really so? But on further examination of the currents between Japan and the West surely we can claim this is a genre which distills the questions of the modern age. Yu Kawashima has followed in this path combining his keen interest in the Meiji master Gaho Hashimoto with depictions of contemporary scenes and issues to form a highly engaging expression.
